Cole Neer, a doctoral student in psychology and Student Assistant in Special Collections at Ingram Library, is sharing his experience on how working on campus is far more than a job. It is an opportunity to gain hands-on experience, enhance research skills, and connect with the library faculty that encourages growth and student success.
For Cole, through this experiential learning experience in the library, he built connections with international psychology scholars and developed his skills as an early-career academic.
Hear how experiential learning is helping shape his journey along the way.

What happens when extraordinary experiences leave behind newspaper headlines, government files, and case notes that continue to raise questions?
Exceptional Experiences, curated by Cole Neer, explores the Cold War eraโs surprising โpsychic arms race,โ when both the CIA and Soviet Union investigated whether psychic abilities could be used for intelligence gathering. Newspaper coverage from the time reveals growing public fascination with the idea of psychic spies and mindโbased espionage. The exhibit also features case notes from UWG professor William G. Rollโs investigation of the realโlife haunting that inspired the 1982 film Poltergeist, offering a glimpse into one of the most famous paranormal cases in American pop culture.
Visit Ingram Library to explore the stories, documents, and enduring mysteries surrounding experiences that remain difficult to explain.

What happens when extraordinary experiences leave behind physical objects, historical records, and accounts that continue to raise questions?
Exceptional Experiences, curated by Cole Neer, brings together intriguing pieces of paranormal history, including bent and twisted utensils associated with demonstrations and claims of psychokinesisโthe suggested ability to affect physical objects through mental effort alone. The exhibit also explores the story of Ingo Swann, who performed a remote viewing of Jupiter in the 1970s and described faint rings around the gas giant before they were later confirmed by the Voyager probes. His account became one of the most famous examples of remote viewing.
