Today we were part of the Engage Raleigh Expo organized by City of Raleigh - Government. It is always a privilege to share CORRAL's mission and work.

This is CORRAL's second year connecting with the Raleigh community in this space. This time we decided to do something a little different. Instead of simply telling folks about CORRAL, we wanted to connect them with the youth we serve.

So, we asked a question and invited folks to share their response with our students.

⭐️ If you could talk to your teenage self, what would you say?

We heard from people of all ages and backgrounds. They thought about who they were as a teen, what they needed to hear, what they struggled with, and how they grew. As they wrote, they thought about CORRAL's youth. How might a message to their past self impact a young person navigating the world today?

They shared generously and beautifully.

We wanted to share this powerful video from the NCSU Literacy and Community Initiative 📝📖

You'll hear from Angela Wiseman, Associate Professor of Literacy Education and Director of the Literacy and Community Initiative. You'll also hear from Refugee Hope Partners and CORRAL students as they reflect on their experiences in LCI's program. ✨

CORRAL has been privileged to partner with LCI over the last several years. For our students, who have often been silenced by injustice and trauma, the opportunity and encouragement to write and publish their own stories is an empowering, life-giving experience.

Our gratitude for LCI is entwined with in our love for Dr. Crystal Chen Lee. She was - and is - a blessing to our mission in many ways. As a CORRAL board member and vice-chair, Crystal's vision and dedication to our youth shaped the organization's work during a critical time of growth and transition. She helped guide CORRAL with the same faith, wisdom, and joy that inspired her to found and lead the Literacy and Community Initiative at NC State.

We are so excited to see the art, stories, and growth from our students as they embark on this new program year with LCI! We look forward to celebrating their voices and feeling Crystal's impact in their art and words. ❤️

As we begin Hispanic Heritage Month, we're thinking about the impact Hispanic and Latino folks have had on the United States throughout our history.

This impact is felt deeply here at CORRAL. Our therapeutic work with horses is grounded in many practices, including Vaquero horsemanship.

The Vaquero style of horse training is rooted in the indigenous cultures of the Americas. Due to equipment limitations imposed by the Spanish, the indigenous riders of Mexico developed a ba****ck riding style that emphasized the importance of a slower, relationship-focused approach. This style of riding requires intuition, subtle communication, and a deep connection with the horse.

The Vaquero method shows up in our work as we help teens understand the power of intentional communication vs. force in relationship building. As girls work in partnership with CORRAL horses, they pick up the tools they need to build their own bridge to healing and healthy human connection.

This is just one example of the way CORRAL is shaped by Hispanic culture! Our community is richer because of the voices, work, and perspectives of our Hispanic and Latino students, staff, volunteers, and family.

We're so excited to finally share about the amazing work of our friends at Crafting Change!

Crafting Change is an organization of creatives whose goal is to combine activism and craft to create meaningful change. For months, these artists have been creating beautiful paintings, textiles, and mixed media works that reflect CORRAL's mission. They've also been putting together an incredible event that we can't wait to share with our community!

On October 7th, we'll host a special evening at our Cary Farm to celebrate our partnership and raise funds to power CORRAL's life-changing programs.
