"Why is that horse wearing leg warmers?"

We get this question a lot when folks visit the farms in the warmer months! While some of our herd members don't mind accessorizing (we have a miniature horse who can absolutely ✨work✨ a Santa hat), their summer gear serves a more practical purpose.

Flies become more prevalent in the warmer, wetter months of the year. Horse tears and blood are a fly food source. Thankfully, horses have some built-in protection from fly bites in the form of their manes, swishy tails, and a cool little trick known as the cutaneous muscle reflex (this is the twitching you see under their skin when they sense a fly has landed on them!).

A horse's eyes and the thin skin on their lower legs need a little extra protection sometimes. That's when we break out the fly gear!

Horses can still see, move, and enjoy life as usual with their fly gear on. Some of them seem to take extra delight in shedding their fly gear in order to set up elaborate scavenger hunts for our CORRAL students, staff, and amazing equine volunteers. 🐴❤️

Our Join the Herd summer sessions are coming to a close later this week. We're looking forward to celebrating the hard work, growth, and dedication of the teens we serve - and the amazing horses, volunteers and program staff that make it all possible! ❤️🐴🙏

WE'RE HIRING! CORRAL is looking for an experienced Equine Manager to join our team! 🐎🧡🚜

The Equine Manager is responsible for horse care and training to meet the needs of the program participants in riding and Equine Assisted Psychotherapy sessions. Additionally, the Equine Manager will lead the Equine and Facilities Volunteer Teams to provide a safe barn, arena, and fields for the horses and programming.

When Jeanette's family faced many devastating circumstances all at once, she didn't retreat. She showed up, used the tools she learned, and worked towards healing.

Our participants showed so much growth this year and continued to show up and show out! We also celebrated our equine manager, Christina's, last day! Seeing her transition from alumni to staff has been extremely special, and we are so excited for her new journey! 💕

This week, we are sharing about Maggie. After being uprooted from one foster placement to another, she found her way back to CORRAL, and she's been blossoming ever since. After a tough session with her horse, her reflection: "Some relationships take longer than others, and that's ok." ✨🐎🧡
