From North Carolina to New Orleans! 💧

Gracie Schehl, one of our recent engineering graduates, represented North Carolina at WEFTEC’s national Student Design Competition with her NC State team!

After winning the competition at the state level, Gracie and her teammates earned their spot at the national competition, putting their wastewater engineering knowledge and design skills to the test alongside student teams from across the country.

This was another exciting milestone for Gracie and her team after their 3rd-place finish at the ASCE Civil Engineering Student Championship earlier this year—the first time an NC State team has ever placed at an ASCE national competition.

We’re proud to see Gracie continue putting her engineering skills to work and representing NC State and North Carolina on the national stage. 👏

At a recent Professional Engineers of North Carolina seminar, Paul Shivers, HIGHFILL’s Wilmington Office Manager and Senior Project Manager, presented “Riding the Waves of Flood Defense: Wallace WWTP.”

Paul shared insights into the engineering and design behind flood protection improvements at the Wallace Wastewater Treatment Plant, focusing on reducing flood risk, protecting critical infrastructure, and improving long-term reliability.

Thanks to PENC for hosting a great seminar and bringing professionals together to discuss resilient infrastructure!

Last month, Tyler Highfill led our monthly Lunch & Learn on Successful Pump Station Renovation Tips, sharing 20 practical tips covering pump station renovations from start to finish.

Our Cary team gathered in person for the presentation, while teammates across our other offices joined virtually. We love having opportunities like these to bring our team together, share knowledge, and continue strengthening our skills - whether virtually or in person.

As we continue celebrating World Water Week, we’re highlighting another member of our team who is helping make a difference through her involvement with Water For People.

Ashlynn Ortell, EI supports the organization’s efforts to bring communities together to help address the global water crisis. Through fundraising events like the Water For People 5K, she helps bring people together to support a cause that reaches far beyond our own communities.

Her involvement is a reminder that creating lasting change can take many forms — and sometimes, you can “have a good time for a good cause.” 🏃‍♀️💧
