Black Autism Acceptance Day | September 19

2026 marks the inaugural observance of Black Autism Acceptance Day, a new movement dedicated to increasing visibility, promoting acceptance, and advancing equity for Black autistic individuals and their families.

Observed each year on September 19, this day highlights the unique experiences of Black autistic people while bringing attention to the disparities that have too often led to delayed diagnoses, misdiagnosis, and unequal access to care and support. It also celebrates the strengths, achievements, and contributions of the Black autistic community.

Founded through the advocacy of Ayanna Sanaa Davis, Black Autism Acceptance Day is a reminder that acceptance goes beyond awareness. It calls on all of us to create communities where Black autistic individuals are respected, supported, included, and empowered to thrive.

As we recognize this inaugural year, we honor Black autistic voices, challenge stigma, advocate for equitable access to services, and reaffirm our commitment to building a more inclusive future for everyone 🤎

When my mom first told me they had come out with an autistic Barbie, my first reaction was, “So… what did they do, just slap some headphones on her?”

And yes. She is wearing noise-canceling headphones….😅. But then I actually looked into it, and my opinion changed.

This doll was designed in partnership with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN), an organization I love and respect. She has a slightly averted gaze, articulated arms for stimming, and comes with sensory-friendly accessories like a fidget spinner, noise-canceling headphones, and an AAC tablet. Her outfit is comfy and practical, and it shows how much thought went into her.

I know some high-masking autistic folks worry this makes autism look like “one thing,” and I get that. But I actually think it opens the door to better conversations about what autism looks like across the spectrum.

I also think we forget something important. When a lot of people hear the word autism, they picture children. But autistic kids grow up to be autistic adults. Barbie is an adult.

Over the years, I have watched a lot of moms I know get their kids diagnosed and then slowly realize that they themselves are autistic too. Just like me. Many of us spent our lives masking our way through school, work, and motherhood, and getting diagnosed with everything except autism. Anxiety. Depression. BPD. Sometimes ADHD, if we were lucky. I did not even get that until my late 20s.

I never even considered that I might be autistic until my oldest daughter was diagnosed, and then it clicked. She is basically me. 😅 Autism really does look different in girls. If we are being honest, a lot of people still picture a little white boy when they hear the word autism, so I also love that this Barbie looks nothing like that stereotype.

Do I wear big earmuffs? No. I wear Loop earbuds. Same purpose. Less obvious. And yes, I absolutely love a good fidget. I have a whole basket of them by my desk because sitting still and being productive is not my strength.

This doll also sparked some really good conversations about the word autistic. In our house, it is not a bad word.

Some people prefer to say “person with autism” or “on the spectrum,” and that is their choice. Many autistic adults prefer identity-first language, meaning “autistic person,” because autism is not something we are carrying around. It is part of how our brains work and how we experience the world. For a lot of us, separating the person from the autism feels like separating the person from their personality. Listening to autistic adults changed everything for me.

There is a lot of good in this doll. It was a no-brainer to bring her home for my sweet girl. 💗

Representation matters. Sometimes so do tiny plastic noise-canceling headphones.
