REcompute

A timely reminder to keep your Linux Mint system upgraded and secure.

REcomputers and other Linux Mint Cinnamon users, please remember to update your system when you see the orange dot on the update shield in the right section of your toolbar. Updating keeps your operating system up to date and safe, as well as installing any available updates for the software you have installed.
Do this once a week and keep your laptop working for you!
Happy Holidays, and see you in the New Year!

The 300th laptop to be entered into the REcompute database is this nice little 14-inch Dell Latitude 7400, donated by an anonymous donor included in a batch of Dell and Lenovo laptops. We're very grateful for the donation, and would give credit if we could.
We have, of course, received many more than 300 laptops. Not all of them could be refurbished because of age, condition, or compatibility, but the ones not entered into the database have had various items such as working hard drives and memory chips removed and recycled, and, in many cases, used in upgrading of working donations. And they are then recycled, not destined for the landfill.
Find out how you and/or your business or organisation can help the REcompute mission by donating your older or unused laptops to our program so they can be redistributed to members of our community who find it a challenge to join the digital world we all take for granted:

Laptops can be donated at the front desk of either Salt & Light in Urbana, or with Needful Things in Champaign. We are grateful for the support and cooperation of these two local enterprises.

Thank you for your consideration

Seems the al-gore-rhythym has decided to plonk this post on your page because it has determined that you need this information. I do hope so.

It's very simple and I won't take much of your valuable scrolling time.

REcompute seeks donations of older and unused laptops so we can wipe them clean, very clean, spotless in fact, then install a new free OS (Linux), and arrange for applicants to pop by and pick them up and take them home. FREE. I do not make any money from this project.

This allows folks, who otherwise couldn't, to cross the and create their own , and join the rest of us on the .

Thank you for this brief interruption to your digital day. If you wish to help, which I sorely hope you do, you can find much more information at www.recompute.info

REcompute gets dozens of unsolicited emails every day. People and companies who think we sell laptops. People and companies who think we're looking for and need $500k+ in financing. Neither is true. Some of these emails are from bots, of course. This is par for the course. Some of them are from people who do not pay full attention to our mission. Can't do anything about that.

All we need are older and unused laptops from you or your company or organization. They are wiped clean and sanitized. We have absolutely no interest in what is on your hard drives, so we wipe them clean so we can install a free operating system, Linux, enabling recipients of the free laptops to pursue their professional, personal or academic goals, so they can cross the and enjoy the so many of us take for granted.
Donate your unused laptop(s), please.

A long-overdue shout-out to the volunteer ladies behind the front desk at Salt & Light in Urbana. They receive donated laptops for REcompute and keep them safe for me to pick up, so I can refurbish them and get them ready to give away to members of the community. Thank you ladies! Appreciate you!
