When the Law Blamed the Farmer

Imagine waking up one morning and discovering that your entire cornfield had been destroyed by your neighbor’s cattle.

You knew whose animals had done it.

You could see their tracks across your land.

But when you complained, the law gave you a surprising answer:

“It was your fault.”

In colonial America, livestock often wandered freely under what became known as the open-range system.

The law did not always require livestock owners to keep their animals fenced in.

Instead, farmers were expected to fence their crops out.

If cattle entered your field and destroyed your harvest—and your property was not protected by a legal fence—you might have no right to recover your losses.

So, before many farmers could feel secure about what they had planted, they first had to build a boundary around it.

But there was another problem.

Metal hardware was expensive, labor was difficult, and farmers needed something they could build quickly with the materials around them.

Their solution became known as the Worm Fence, also called the Virginia Rail Fence.

Long wooden rails were stacked in an interlocking zigzag pattern.

It required no nails.

No posts had to be buried.

Gravity and the weight of the rails held everything together.

It looked simple—but it protected the farmer’s work, food and livelihood.

That is what makes this story so interesting:

The fence was not built merely to mark the land. It was built because everything inside that boundary mattered.

Hundreds of years later, fences have changed.

But the reason we build them has not.

We still want to protect the people, pets, property and moments that matter to us.

What matters to you deserves a clear boundary.

**The King Who Wanted to Be Alone**

Louis XIV had more than 2,000 rooms in the Palace of Versailles.

He could order the construction of magnificent gardens, fountains, and halls covered in gold.

But there was one thing even he could rarely enjoy:

**A moment alone.**

Every morning, a group of nobles entered his bedroom to watch him wake up.

Some were given the privilege of handing him his clothes. Others were simply allowed to stand there and observe.

Even his meals became public events.

His entire day was scheduled almost minute by minute, and much of his life happened in front of other people.

But here is where the story gets interesting.

After living surrounded by luxury, power, and hundreds of people, the kings who followed began creating smaller, more private rooms inside the palace—places where they could escape the enormous public halls and finally experience a little peace.

Think about that:

**Even one of the largest and most impressive palaces in the world needed a place where no one else could look inside.**

Because privacy does not always mean you are hiding something.

Sometimes, it simply means sitting outside with your family, letting your children play, or enjoying a quiet moment without feeling like the whole world is watching you.

You can build an enormous house…

But if you do not have a space that truly feels like your own, something is still missing.

A fence does more than mark where your property ends.

**It creates a small part of the world where you can finally let your guard down.**
