For Brandon, Atrium Health has never been just a workplace. It's been woven into nearly every chapter of his family's story.

Born and raised in Charlotte, Brandon's connection to Atrium Health began long before he joined the organization. As a child, he watched his younger brother, Ryan, receive care for a brain tumor and later continue follow-up treatment at Atrium Health Levine Children's Hospital. More than 20 years later, Ryan is cancer-free and now works for Atrium Health himself, making the family's connection to the organization even more meaningful.

A chance introduction to pharmacy during a middle school career day set Brandon on a path he never expected. After shadowing a local pharmacist, he fell in love with the profession and pursued pharmacy school, eventually landing a summer internship with Atrium Health. What began as a 10-week internship turned into more than 14 years of service to the organization.

Today, Brandon serves as a pharmacy leader supporting pediatric specialty pharmacy services, transplant patients, hospital discharge programs and outpatient pharmacy operations.

His family's connection to Atrium Health extends across generations. His father, John, has spent more than 25 years with the organization helping onboard providers. His wife, Bianca, is also a pharmacist leader, and his brother, Ryan, supports operations through materials management. Together, they represent different parts of the organization all united by a shared commitment to caring for others.

But their relationship with Atrium Health goes beyond the roles they hold today. Brandon found himself working in the very building where his brother received care, helping pediatric patients and families facing challenges of their own. Both of Brandon's daughters were born at Atrium Health, including his youngest daughter, who spent 102 days in the NICU after arriving early. His family also relied on Atrium Health while navigating pregnancy loss and pregnancy complications, giving him a unique perspective as both a caregiver and a patient family member.

Today, those personal experiences shape the way he approaches every patient interaction.

“I don't look at myself as just the pharmacist dispensing medication. I understand that these medications are needed, and sometimes they're life and death. Having gone through some of those experiences helps me provide more empathy. It's about making sure people know you care about them as a whole person, not just as a patient.”

From being the brother of a pediatric cancer patient to becoming a pharmacy leader serving children and families, Brandon's story is a powerful reminder that healthcare is more than a career. For his family, Atrium Health has been there through some of life's most challenging moments and its greatest blessings, creating a legacy of care that now spans multiple generations.

We’re one step closer.

Today’s vote by the Wake County Board of Commissioners marks an important milestone in the proposed combination of WakeMed Health & Hospitals and Atrium Health. Together, we have the opportunity to be stronger together for the patients, families and communities who count on us every day.

As this combination now moves through regulatory review, we are excited about what this will bring to Wake County, including a $2 billion investment in WakeMed, establishing a $150 million Wake County Whole Health Program, strengthening charity care commitments and supporting continued investment in the people, services and resources.

There is more work ahead, and we know that trust is earned through action. We’re committed to listening, following through on our commitments and continuing to focus on what matters most: the health and well-being of the people and communities we serve.

Thank you to the Wake County Board of Commissioners and to everyone who continues to support our purpose to redefine care for all.

For decades, Greg Walter has lived in a world defined by speed, leading Charlotte Motor Speedway through some of the biggest moments in motorsports. But over Easter weekend last year, subtle symptoms he dismissed as fatigue and getting older were actually warning signs of something far more serious. What followed was a massive heart attack, cardiac arrest and a medical journey few survive.

After arriving at Atrium Health, doctors discovered Greg had suffered a severe heart attack caused by a completely blocked “widow maker” artery. His condition rapidly worsened, leading to prolonged CPR, advanced mechanical circulatory support and ECMO to keep blood and oxygen flowing through his body when his heart could no longer function on its own. Teams across emergency medicine, cardiac care, intensive care and transplant services worked together in real time to save his life.

Greg spent nearly three months in intensive care, where advanced technology sustained him, but he says it was the people who left the greatest impact. The nurses who became like family. The clinicians who fought for him. The care teams who guided him and his loved ones through uncertainty.

As his condition evolved, specialists determined a heart transplant would offer his best chance at survival. After weeks of waiting, multiple donor evaluations and emotional highs and lows, Greg received the call: a matching donor heart was available. His transplant was successful, giving him a second chance at life.

Today, Greg is back at Charlotte Motor Speedway with a renewed perspective on leadership, gratitude and the everyday moments he once took for granted. He carries not only a new heart, but a deep appreciation for his donor, the donor’s family and the teams who helped make his recovery possible.

His story is a powerful reminder to listen to your body, recognize heart attack symptoms early and understand the life-changing impact of advanced cardiac care and organ donation.

Creating connection, one seat at a time.

Loneliness is more than being alone. It is the feeling of being disconnected, and it can affect anyone at any stage of life. In a world where many people feel disconnected, even when surrounded by others, small moments of connection can remind us that we are seen, valued and never truly alone.

Atrium Health behavioral health teammates partnered with Team Hope, community leaders and local organizations to bring the Charlotte region's first "Happy to Chat" bench to Cane Creek Park in Union County. Marked with a welcoming sign, the bench offers an invitation to sit down, start a conversation and make a connection with someone new. The initiative was inspired by a shared goal of reducing social isolation and creating opportunities for meaningful human interaction in our community.

"Connection is an extremely important part of being human," shares Kate Penny, program coordinator for Zero Su***de at Atrium Health. "When people build supportive relationships, they have someone they can reach out to during times of sadness. That connection can make a meaningful difference."

As communities continue to seek ways to support mental health and well-being, initiatives like the Happy to Chat bench serve as a reminder of the importance of connection.

We are proud of our behavioral health team who helped bring this meaningful resource to Union County and are grateful to everyone who made it possible. Together, we're building a healthier community, one conversation, one connection and one shared moment at a time.

For Jackie, survivorship care is personal.

After seeing her young cousin’s cancer journey continue long after treatment ended, Jackie found her purpose in helping survivors navigate life after cancer — physically, emotionally and practically.

Today, Jackie is a nurse program coordinator with the Survivorship Clinic at Atrium Health Levine Cancer, where she helps survivors rebuild their lives “brick by brick” with care, education and supportive programs.

“Cancer doesn’t just impact the part of your body where it is found — it impacts your whole self,” Jackie says.

Outside of work, she recharges on her mini-farm, caring for goats, a horse and chickens, and volunteering with community theaters in Salisbury.

In the clinic, Jackie is most proud of the growth of the program and she works hard to raise awareness around its benefits.
