What does it really mean to follow Jesus?

As Jesus brings the Sermon on the Mount to a close in Matthew 7, He presents His followers with a clear call to action: choose the narrow way, recognize false teachers, and build your life on a foundation that will stand firm.

But Jesus also offers some sobering warnings. Outward appearances and impressive accomplishments don’t necessarily reveal a genuine relationship with Him.

In Season 7, Episode 6 of *Know God Deeply*, the team explores Jesus’ final teachings in the Sermon on the Mount and considers what it looks like to walk in His way, discern truth from deception, and stand firm in Christ through every storm.

Let’s mark ✍🏻 Jesus’ teaching on Matthew 7 together!

This is Matthew 7:1–5, a short, dense passage packed with instructions. Read it once before we start marking, and try listing the instructions you find on your own. 

Mark every form of this word: judge, judged, and judgment. Then count how many times it appears in verses 1 and 2 alone, and note who is doing the judging in each case. 

Mark speck and log in contrasting ways. Then track which one belongs to your brother and which one belongs to you, and note the size of each. 

Jesus is not forbidding all moral discernment. He is condemning self-righteous judgment that scrutinizes another person while excusing oneself. The contrast is deliberately absurd: we grow sensitive to a brother’s small fault while staying blind to our own greater sin. Jesus pairs that warning with an invitation to ask, seek, and knock. What is one thing you have been slow to bring to God in prayer that you can ask Him for this week?

Planks and prayers. What does Jesus want us to see?

In Matthew 7, Jesus addresses two areas that can reveal a lot about the condition of our hearts: how we judge others and how we pray.

He warns against focusing on the speck in someone else’s eye while ignoring the log in our own. Then He reminds us of something equally important: our Father is good, faithful, and knows how to give good things to His children.

So what does Jesus really mean when He says, “Judge not”? And does “everyone who asks receives” mean God will give us everything we ask for?
