What happens during a vision therapy evaluation? ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿง

Wondering what to expect? A vision therapy evaluation looks beyond how clearly your child can see. We assess the visual skills that help them read, learn, write, move, and perform comfortably.

Depending on your childโ€™s needs, we may look at skills such as:

๐Ÿ‘€ Eye tracking
๐ŸŽฏ Eye teaming
๐Ÿ” Focusing
๐Ÿง  Visual processing
๐Ÿ“ Spatial awareness
โœ๏ธ Visual-motor skills

The goal is to understand how your childโ€™s visual system is workingโ€”and whether there are skills that may be getting in the way of everyday activities.

If your child is struggling with reading, schoolwork, sports, handwriting, or visual fatigue, a vision therapy evaluation may be a helpful next step. ๐Ÿ’œ

๐ŸŽฏ THE READING-EYE CHALLENGE! ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ“š

Think reading is just about knowing the words? Your eyes are working hard, too!

Try this quick challenge with your child: Can their eyes move smoothly from โ‘  โ†’ โ‘ก โ†’ โ‘ข and follow the sentence without losing their place?

Reading requires our eyes to:
๐Ÿ‘€ Track across the page
๐ŸŽฏ Move accurately from word to word
๐Ÿง  Work together with the brain to make sense of what we see

If your child frequently loses their place, skips words or lines, or struggles to keep up while reading, their visual skills may be worth a closer look.

Clear vision is just one part of successful reading. ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’š

Can your child complete the Reading-Eye Challenge? Let us know! ๐Ÿ‘‡

If a child canโ€™t clearly see the words, more tutoring may not be the answer. ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ“š

Sometimes, reading struggles can be connected to visual skills that affect how comfortably and efficiently a child uses their eyes while reading.

A child may have 20/20 vision and still have difficulty with:
๐Ÿ‘€ Tracking across a page
๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Teaming both eyes together
๐ŸŽฏ Maintaining focus
๐Ÿง  Processing visual information

Before assuming a child just needs to โ€œtry harder,โ€ itโ€™s worth asking: Can they see and use what theyโ€™re being asked to learn?

If your child struggles with reading, a functional vision evaluation can help identify whether visual skills may be part of the picture. ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’š

Looks like ADHD? It might be the eyes. ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿง

Some behaviors that look like inattention may actually be connected to visual skills that make reading and near work harder than they should be.

Does your child:
๐Ÿ“š Have difficulty copying from the board?
๐Ÿ”Ž Skip words or lines while reading?
โœ๏ธ Avoid near tasks?
๐Ÿค• Get headaches while reading?
๐Ÿช‘ Struggle to stay focused during desk work?

These signs donโ€™t necessarily mean a child has a vision problemโ€”or ADHD. But they can be a reason to look at how well their visual system is working during learning.

A child can have 20/20 vision and still have difficulty with visual skills needed for reading, focusing, and learning.

If this sounds familiar, a functional vision evaluation may be worth exploring. ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’š

And yesโ€”this can happen even when a child has ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ/๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ ๐ฏ๐ข๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง!

๐Ÿ“š โ€œMy child hates reading.โ€ What should I look for? ๐Ÿ‘€

When a child avoids reading, itโ€™s easy to assume they simply donโ€™t enjoy it. But sometimes, reading may be visually uncomfortable or require more effort than it should.

Watch for signs like:

๐Ÿ‘€ Losing their place or skipping lines
๐Ÿข Reading slowly or re-reading frequently
๐Ÿ˜ด Getting tired quickly while reading
๐Ÿค• Complaining of headaches or eye discomfort
๐Ÿšซ Avoiding books or longer reading assignments

Remember: 20/20 vision doesnโ€™t tell the whole story. A child can see clearly and still have difficulty with the visual skills needed for comfortable, efficient reading.

If these signs sound familiar, consider a functional vision evaluation to learn more about how your childโ€™s visual system is working for reading and learning. ๐Ÿ’œ

๐Ÿ’œ Every Child Deserves the Chance to Learn Comfortably. ๐Ÿ“š

Some children struggle quietly. They may avoid reading, get frustrated with homework, have difficulty copying from the board, or struggle to keep up during sportsโ€”not because they aren't trying, but because their visual system may be working harder than it should.

๐Ÿ‘€ Vision is more than seeing clearly. Children use visual skills every day to read, write, learn, move, play, and participate confidently.

If your child frequently:
โœจ Loses their place while reading
โœจ Avoids or tires quickly during homework
โœจ Struggles to copy from the board
โœจ Has difficulty with sports or coordination
โœจ Becomes frustrated with visually demanding tasks

โ€ฆit may be worth taking a closer look at their functional vision.

Every child deserves the opportunity to learn with confidence and comfort. ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ‘€

When your child reads, their eyes are constantly taking in visual informationโ€”but the brain has to ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐œ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ, ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ž๐ญ, ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ฆ๐š๐ค๐ž ๐ฌ๐ž๐ง๐ฌ๐ž ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ฐ๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ž๐ฒ๐ž๐ฌ ๐ฌ๐ž๐ž.

That means reading involves much more than simply seeing the words clearly. ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ“–

The eyes and brain have to work together to:
โœจ Track across a page
โœจ Recognize letters and words
โœจ Process visual information
โœจ Connect what is seen with meaning
