Two caveats:
The drop in gout risk has to be weighed against the 32% higher odds of kidney stones in men taking vitamin C supplements. (No statistically significant increase in risk has been found in women taking vitamin C supplements.) PMID: 30178451
Concurrent vitamin C can exacerbate the intestinal damage caused by NSAID drugs. PMID: 25641731
For these reasons, Dr. Greger recommends sticking to vitamin C–rich whole foods, such as citrus, strawberries, bell peppers, and broccoli.
There’s more to pain relief than pills. How Not to Hurt will be released on December 15, but you can preorder it now.

When we eat whole-grain barley for dinner, our good gut bacteria have it for breakfast the next morning and the short-chain fatty acid butyrate is released into our bloodstream. This exerts a wide range of anti-inflammatory effects. Dripping butyrate on cartilage carvings taken from the leg bones of those undergoing joint replacement surgery has been shown to significantly suppress inflammatory cartilage loss in vitro.
