🔥 Pipe Class — Simple... But Many Get It Wrong!
In piping, many people assume:
👉🏻 Class 150 = Pipe Class
👉🏻 Sch 40 = Pipe Class
❌ That is wrong.

This misunderstanding leads to wrong material, incorrect fl**ge rating, wrong gasket, wrong bolting - and eventually leakage during hydrotest or failure during operation.

📌 What Is Pipe Class?
Pipe Class (Piping Class) is defined in the Piping Material Specification (PMS).
It is a project-specific system requirement, not a universal ASME class.

It defines what components and limits are allowed for a specific service and condition.
It is not a single item — it is a complete system definition.
📍 Typically includes:

• Pipe material
• Pipe schedule
• Fl**ge rating
• Valve type
• Gasket type
• Bolt / stud & nut material
• Corrosion allowance
• Service / medium (including sour or non-sour)
• Design pressure & temperature

👉🏻 Pipe Class = full system requirement

Most Common Misunderstanding
Codes like A1A, B2B, CS150:
❌ Not universal
❌ Not from code
They are defined by each project.

👉🏻 Never assume - always refer PMS
Pipe Class vs Rating
Class 150 / 300 / 600 come from ASME B16.5
They define:
• Pressure-temperature rating
• Dimensions
• Bolt circle & quantity

👉🏻 Class 150 # 150 psi
Depends on material & temperature
Pipe Class vs Schedule Schedule (Sch 40 / 80):
• Pipe thickness series
• Standard dimension
Reference:
• ASME B36.10
• ASME B36.19
👉🏻 Schedule is only part of the requirement
Pipe Class Is Driven By Service
A good piping engineer does not look at pipe alone.

Pipe Class is tied to:
• Fluid / medium
• Temperature
• Pressure
• Corrosivity
• Sour or non-sour condition
👉🏻 Sour service (HS) affects material selection, hardness limits, gasket and bolting requirement.

Test Pressure - Don't Mix It Up
Pipe Class defines:
• Design pressure & temperature
Testing comes from:
• ASME B31.3

Typical concept:
• Hydrotest = 1.5 x design pressure
• Pneumatic test lower (higher risk)

👉🏻Always check weakest component and rating limit

Real Site Example
You see:
👉🏻 6"-P-1201-A1A
Wrong approach:
❌ Assume A1A directly

Correct QC Approach
Step 1 - Refer PMS
Only PMS defines A1A
Step 2 - Verify at site

Check:
• Pipe material & marking
• Schedule
• Fl**ge class
• Valve rating
• Gasket (ASME B16.20 / B16.21)
• Bolt / stud & nut material
• Service condition (sour / non-sour)
Step 3 - Check as system
👉🏻 All components must match
If one mismatch:
👉🏻 Line = FAIL

Common Site Mistakes
Using higher class fl**ge:
❌Not automatically safer
❌Different dimensions & bolting
Wrong bolting:
❌ Using same bolt for all services
❌Ignoring low temp or sour requirement
👉🏻 Risk: leakage or failure
