We offer our condolences to the friends and family of CPL Magdalena Jablonska, USMC (1996 - 2000), who was tragically killed in a boating accident on the Fox River (Illinois) over the weekend.

Magdalena's life was senselessly taken when a boat, traveling at 80 mph and operated by an individual with a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of between 0.2 and 0.236, collided into hers while in a "No Wake Zone."

This is a reminder that operating a Boat while under the influence is a crime. If an accident occurs that causes a death, it becomes Aggravated Homicide and can carry a prison sentence of 3 to 14 years.

A reminder during this that fireworks don't only impact our pets, or even the from dry grass due to hot weather.

The sounds and flashes from Class A and Class B (Commerical and Professional Grade Fireworks) can serve as triggers for PTSD episodes.

Please be mindful of combat veterans in your neighborhoods.

Veterans can also help themselves through the following ways:

1.) Practice grounding techniques. Hold a piece of ice, keep telling yourself "this is not a combat zone," box breathing, or focus on the smell of a candle or air freshener in your home.

2.) Go to a quieter area if you know neighbors set off professional grade fireworks.

3.) Use noise cancelling headphones and blackout shades.

We should celebrate our nation's 250th, but let's do it safely and with consideration for our fellow citizens and neighbors.
