How the Uterus Changes Through Pregnancy

During pregnancy, a woman’s body experiences remarkable changes, with one of the most significant occurring in the uterus, the organ that nurtures and protects the developing fetus. At the start of the first trimester, the uterus is small, about the size of a pear, weighing 50–60 grams and measuring 7–8 centimeters long. It sits low in the pelvis above the bladder and is primarily muscular and firm. Its main role at this stage is to provide a safe environment for the embryo and support early development. Even in this small size, the uterus begins adapting structurally to accommodate the placenta, which supplies nutrients and oxygen to the growing fetus.

By the third trimester, the uterus enlarges dramatically to house the fetus, placenta, and amniotic fluid. It can weigh around 1 kilogram and stretch from the pelvis to the ribcage, expanding up to 500 times its original volume. The muscular walls thin to allow growth while remaining strong enough to support the fetus. This expansion affects other organs, compressing the bladder, shifting the stomach and intestines, and raising the diaphragm, which can cause frequent urination, indigestion, and shortness of breath.

Hormones like estrogen and progesterone aid this process by increasing blood flow, softening ligaments, and allowing the uterine muscles to stretch safely. By labor, the uterus is highly muscular and ready to contract powerfully to deliver the baby. Understanding these changes helps explain common pregnancy symptoms and highlights the incredible adaptability and resilience of the female body.
