If you’ve ever looked at your renovation halfway through and wondered, “What have I done?” ...you’re not alone.
This is the part nobody puts on Pinterest.
The beautiful spaces you see at the end all go through an awkward stage first. Dust, tape, half-finished tile, and a whole lot of trusting the process. And then one day, it all comes together.
Just wait.
Have you ever walked through a house where every room looked exactly the same? Same colours. Same feeling. By the third room, it almost feels like you’ve already seen the whole house.
Beth wanted the complete opposite. She dreamed of a home inspired by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel—a little Parisian, a little grandma chic, collected rather than coordinated.
So instead of repeating the same formula everywhere, we let each room have its own personality. A jewel-box red entry. A calm, layered living room. A playful family room with a wallpapered ceiling. A boutique hotel-inspired bathroom.
Different moods, different stories...but all speaking the same language.

I know renovations often get talked about as stressful, and overwhelming, but they can also be incredibly rewarding.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There’s something special about creating a home that works better for your life, reflects who you are, and supports the way you want to live every day.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Yes, there are decisions to make and moments that require patience. But there can also be excitement, creativity, and a real sense of fulfillment in watching your home become something even better than you imagined.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I think we should normalize that part of the renovation experience too. 🤍

Emily and Dan weren’t looking for a showpiece. They were looking for a place where real life could unfold comfortably.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A home for coffee that turns into an hour-long conversation. For friends dropping by on a Saturday night. For quiet evenings on the sofa with Clark the goldendoodle curled up nearby. For all the little moments that end up becoming the memories you keep.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That thinking shaped every decision in this room.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The oversized sectional encourages people to settle in. The marble coffee table softens the space with its curved form and subtle movement. The layered textures add warmth without overwhelming the eye.

Can I tell you a secret? The rooms people save on Pinterest most often usually aren’t the ones that make people the happiest.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Those homes are the ones designed around real life. The morning coffee ritual. The dog that claims the best seat in the house. The dinners that stretch three hours longer than planned.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When I worked on Emily and Dan’s Logan Square home, those everyday moments became the design brief. It’s a small shift in thinking, but it changes everything.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

One thing nobody warns you about when you become a parent is how rare it becomes to have a room that’s just yours.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Suddenly every corner of the house belongs to everyone. There are backpacks on chairs, toys in baskets, art projects on counters, and little people constantly following you around.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That’s why I loved designing this primary suite. They wanted a space that felt separate from all the activity while still having plenty of personality.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A room where the colours felt richer, the vibe cozier, and the pace slower. A place to end the day, recharge, and enjoy a few quiet moments before doing it all again tomorrow.

Bathrooms for families with young kids work very differently than bathrooms designed just for adults.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There are bath toys, wet towels, bedtime routines, kids climbing onto counters, and somehow everyone needing the sink at the exact same time. That reality shaped so many decisions in this La Grange project.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The double vanity gave them breathing room during busy mornings, while the storage gave them practicality.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I also love how the soft blue shower tile changes throughout the day depending on the light. It keeps the room feeling calm and airy without becoming cold.

Can I tell you what I think actually makes a family room work?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s not perfection. It’s whether people naturally want to spend time there.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This Lincoln Park space was designed around real life from the beginning. Kids practicing piano. Someone reading in the corner chair. Movie nights. Friends stopping by. They didn’t want a room that felt too precious, and I think that’s why it turned out so well. Even the bolder choices still feel approachable because they’re balanced with warmth everywhere else.

One thing Michelle and Andy kept coming back to was how much time their family spends in the kitchen.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Cooking together. Hosting friends. Kids wandering in and out. Slow weekend breakfasts around the island.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So when we approached this Downer’s Grove renovation, functionality had to matter just as much as aesthetics. That’s why the layout feels so easy to move through now. There’s better flow, more prep space, smarter storage, and durable finishes that can actually keep up with a busy family of five.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And that’s the sweet spot for me as a designer — when a space feels beautiful enough to admire, but comfortable enough that nobody’s afraid to fully live in it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Save this for kitchen inspiration.

Can we talk about how much easier days become when kids actually want to use their space? That was a huge part of Project Wonder Works.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Instead of hiding everything away behind closed doors, we created playful little nooks that felt approachable and exciting for the kids themselves.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The open closet setup makes costumes, dress-up pieces, and favorite outfits easy to grab independently. And nearby, the dance room with the oversized mirrors and ballet barre became another extension of that idea: a space that encourages movement, creativity, and play in everyday life.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And honestly, those are the details I love most. When a space isn’t just beautiful, but genuinely makes everyday family life feel smoother, lighter, and a little more fun.
