📚What if reading could begin before a child ever enters a classroom?

For generations, literacy was often seen as something that begins when a child starts school.

But it can begin much earlier, at home, in the hands of a parent or caregiver, through a simple story, a picture, a letter, or a conversation.

Through Literacy Hour, we are helping communities create more opportunities for children to experience books and language from their earliest years.

Because reading is about more than recognising letters and words. It builds language, imagination, confidence, curiosity, and a growing understanding of the world.

Yet many parents and caregivers may not have had the opportunity to develop the literacy skills or confidence needed to support their children’s reading journey.

Literacy Hour not only puts books in children’s hands, but it also puts knowledge, skills, and confidence in the hands of the adults who guide them.

Parents and caregivers learn practical ways to read, talk, and engage with their children around stories and books at home.

Because a child’s first reading space does not have to be a classroom.

It can be a home.
It can be a caregiver’s lap.
It can be a shared story before bedtime.

It can begin with a caregiver saying:

“Let’s read together.”

When we equip caregivers, we are supporting more than one child. We are helping build families that read, communities that value learning, and children who grow up believing that books belong to them too.

We are building it now, one child, one caregiver, one family, and one story at a time.
You can help make this possible.

💛 Donate today and help us equip more caregivers with the skills, confidence, and resources to make reading part of everyday family life. https://www.pangeaeducation.org/donate-page

A child doesn’t become a reader simply by learning to read.

They become a reader when they have stories to share, questions to ask, and books to explore.

Literacy is more than reading words. It is the ability to understand, express yourself, ask questions, and make sense of the world.

And it doesn’t stop at the classroom door.

It grows through stories shared at home, conversations with family, books within reach, and communities that make space for learning.

This International Literacy Day, let’s go beyond teaching children to read.

Let’s give every child the opportunity, support, and encouragement to become a lifelong reader.

Build a home that values reading.
Build a community that makes space for learning.
Build a future where every child can read, understand, and thrive.

We are Shaping Teacher Mindsets to transform overall learning outcomes.

Walk into two different classrooms, and you may notice something subtle but powerful.

In one classroom, the teacher believes their learners are capable.

You hear encouragement.

You see patience.

Learners are given opportunities to answer, make mistakes, try again, and improve. Their effort is noticed, even when the answer is not perfect.

In another classroom, the teacher has already decided who is “bright,” who is “slow,” and who is “unlikely to succeed.”

The language changes.

The attention changes.

The opportunities change.

The patience changes.

And eventually, the learner begins to change too.

Expectations shape behaviour. Behaviour shapes experience. And experience shapes belief.

A learner who is constantly told they are weak may eventually believe they are weak.

A learner who is rarely called upon may stop raising their hand.

A learner who is separated from others because they are considered “slow” may begin to see themselves through that label.

This is why teacher mindset matters.

It is not enough to teach teachers what to teach. We must also help them examine their beliefs about the children they teach.

We challenge teachers to look beyond labels and ability groups and instead ask: “What might this learner become if I believe in their potential and give them the right support?”

We also encourage teachers to:

🌱 Celebrate effort, progress and persistence; not just correct answers.

💬 Replace language that labels learners with language that encourages growth.

🤝 Avoid defining children by their current ability.

🎯 Maintain high expectations while providing the support learners need to reach them.

Because a teacher’s words do more than communicate a lesson.

They can shape a learner’s identity.

And sometimes, the difference between “I can’t do this” and “I can learn this” begins with what a teacher chooses to believe.

Every child deserves a teacher who sees their potential before they can see it themselves.

Every story can build confidence, strengthen literacy skills and open new possibilities for the future.

We’re not just teaching children to read. We’re nurturing thinkers, problem-solvers and future leaders.

With Project Backpack, learning travels home. 🎒📚

A child’s learning journey doesn’t happen only in the classroom. It happens in the everyday moments of childhood: in play, family routines, shared stories and the encouragement of a parent.

Through Project Backpack, children have access to books and iPads, while parents receive the guidance and support they need to become active partners in their children’s learning.

Our Learning Guides walk alongside families, checking in, encouraging parents and helping make reading a regular part of life at home.

Because when learning becomes part of everyday life, every moment can become an opportunity to learn, grow and discover.

Project Backpack: bringing learning home, one family at a time. 💛

What happens when a child opens a book for the first time? It looks ordinary. A page turns. A word is sounded out. A character appears from somewhere far away, or a story that feels strangely like their own.

Then something shifts. They start asking questions. Why did that happen? What would I do? Why is the world this way? Could I change it?

That is literacy. Not just reading the words on a page, but making meaning of the world around them. A literate child begins to understand people, cultures, and stories beyond their own. They learn to question what they’re told, and to express what they believe, imagine, and hope for.

And slowly, something bigger happens: they start to see themselves as someone whose voice matters.

Yet for millions of children, that first book never comes. A missing book can seem small. But sometimes a book starts a question. A question becomes an idea. An idea becomes confidence. And confidence gives a child the courage to imagine a different future.

At Pangea, we believe books are more than learning tools. They are invitations: to wonder, to question, to imagine, to speak, to create. When we place a book in a child’s hands, we give them more than a story. We give them another way to understand the world, and the possibility of changing it.🌍📚

And we want more children to receive that invitation.
