The professional home for STEM society CEOs, Executive Directors, and Staff CESSE's greatest resource is its members' wisdom and experience.

Engineering and scientific societies play a crucial role in the development of the professions that are key to advancing innovation. The Council of Engineering and Scientific Society Executives (CESSE), incorporated in 1977, is a professional society of chief executive officers and mid- to senior-level staff members dedicated to leadership excellence. CESSE offers its members a forum for exchanging information about their experiences and a venue for addressing the problems, challenges, and opportunities they face in operating their societies. CESSE members are known - some are even notorious - for their willingness to share their knowledge with colleagues. OUR MISSION
CESSE provides leadership development through networking, education, and the sharing of best practices for the professional leaders of science, technology, engineering, and math societies. OUR VISION
Transforming the future through science, technology, engineering, and math leadership.

Working in an association comes with its own unique landscape, from volunteer governance and membership structures to balancing mission and margin. The CESSE course, Association Basics, helps professionals and partners understand that landscape and build practical knowledge they can apply in their roles.

Co-leading the November session is Matt Miller, Chief Executive Officer of the Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards (CLARB). Matt brings extensive association leadership experience, having previously served as Executive Director & CEO at the American Welding Society, Chief Operating Officer for NACE International, and Director of the SAE Foundation and Pre-Professional Programs at SAE International. He is also a former member of the CESSE Board of Directors.

A meeting can do more than share knowledge. It can spark the connection that leads to the next major innovation.

Toronto’s concentration of hospitals, universities, research institutes and AI organizations has made it easier for clinicians, scientists, engineers and data experts to collaborate on complex challenges. One example is a University Health Network team using AI-powered models and digital twins to evaluate donor lungs.

For STEM society professionals, this story offers a powerful reminder: the ecosystem surrounding a meeting can be just as important as what happens inside the conference venue.

The most valuable conversations in STEM society leadership happen when CEOs and Executive Directors come together to learn from one another, share candid insights, and tackle common challenges. That's exactly what you'll find at the 2027 CESSE CEO Meeting, and helping shape this year's experience are two outstanding volunteer leaders:

Scott Grayson, CAE, Chief Executive Officer, American Public Works Association (APWA) and Abigail Gorman, MBA, Chief Executive Officer, American Society for Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics for (ASCPT).

Together, Scott and Abigail are working with CESSE to create an experience designed by CEOs, for CEOs, focused on the issues that matter most to STEM societies today.
