Three years later, and this still holds up.
The end of the year is one of the best times to get serious about recruiting because agents are already evaluating their business, reflecting on what worked, and thinking about what they want to change next year.
But the opportunity is not in waiting until January to start recruiting.
It is in using the next few months to get your systems in place, identify the right agents, and start building relationships now.
That means:
- tightening your recruiting process
- making sure your CRM and follow-up are working
- using data to prioritize the right agents
- sharpening your brokerage value proposition
- starting conversations before everyone else does
The goal is not to force a move before year-end. It is to create the relationships and momentum that can convert into recruits after the new year.
We wrote this piece for Inman three years ago, and the fundamentals are still just as relevant today.

Maverick Systems is one of 356 nominees for the 25th annual Chicago Innovation Awards.
We spent Wednesday evening at the Nominee Celebration at CineCity Studios, in a room full of Chicago companies building things that work. Good company to be in.
We build brokerage intelligence — recruiting signals, retention signals, and market data that brokerage leaders can actually act on. Being counted in this group says the work is landing.
Congratulations to every nominee, and thanks to Chicago Innovation for the evening.

We’re proud to support Special Olympics and Stephen Votino of Century 21 Triangle as he once again goes Over the Edge for an incredible cause.
On September 26, Stephen will rappel down the side of a building to help raise funds for Special Olympics, an organization that gives children and adults with intellectual disabilities opportunities to train, compete, build confidence, and experience the joy of sport.
Stephen and his team have set an ambitious fundraising goal, and Maverick Systems was happy to contribute.
If you’re able, we encourage you to support their effort. Every donation helps create more opportunities for Special Olympics athletes to challenge themselves, compete, and thrive.
Please consider making a donation and helping them reach their goal.

October 19–21 in Charlotte. Broker owners from across the 21® network, in one room, talking about the thing that actually decides growth: who you recruit and who you keep.
We'll be there. Come find us — we'd rather talk recruiting with you in person than send you a deck.
See you in Charlotte.

Experienced agents have heard every recruiting pitch in the book.
Better culture. Better technology. Better support. Better splits.
None of that means much if you cannot show them how moving to your brokerage will actually make their business better.
The better approach is to stop pitching and start building the business case.
Show them the economics. Show them how you save them time. Show them how you reduce operational friction. Show them how you will make the transition easier and safer.
The more successful the agent, the more logical the decision needs to be.

It isn't a failed listing. It isn't an expired or canceled deal. Those agents are still working — still in motion.
The signal is silence. No closings. No active listings. No new business entering the pipeline.
Failure is loud and visible. Silence is quiet — and it's the one that actually predicts a move. By the time an agent tells you they're leaving, the pipeline told you months ago.
Silence, not failure, is the departure signal.

Most real estate agents who change brokerages aren't top producers.
Nearly half of all movers produced less than $1M in the prior 12 months, and more than 85% produced under $4M.
But follow the dollars, and the story changes.
Agents producing $8M+ represented just 5% of movers but accounted for 37% of the production volume that changed brokerages.
Most movers are small. Most moved dollars are not.
That's why recruiting can't be about production alone. The better strategy is understanding who is likely to move and when. And that timing signal is what many off-the-shelf predictive models miss.
Production tells you the size of the opportunity.
Pipeline activity tells you the timing.

We're now live in MRED.
Maverick's brokerage intelligence is now active across Chicagoland. Northern Illinois brokerage leaders can put real production data behind every recruiting and retention decision — and see which agents are becoming free to move before anyone else does.
Recruiting and retention run on the same signals. Now they cover your market.

We looked at 600,000+ agents in the MLS data. The pattern was hard to miss.
An agent with a recent closing and three or more active listings switches brokerages 2.7% of the time. An agent with no closings in six months and no active listings? 15.6%.
Same person. Nearly six times more likely to move — not because they're unhappy, but because nothing is anchoring them.
Retention and recruiting run on the same signal. Watch the pipeline, not the tenure.
