SEIU Local 1

On Saturday, September 26th, seven SEIU Local 1 members completed the CPR/AED certification through Project Blueprint, certified by the American Red Cross. Only 40–46% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest victims receive CPR from bystanders, though immediate CPR can double or triple survival chances, according to the American Heart Association.

Through CPR/AED training, our members are better equipped and prepared to respond to emergencies in their buildings!

This training is one of the many benefits for SEIU Local 1 commercial janitors offered by the SEIU Local 1 & BOMA/Chicago Training and Legal Fund.

On Friday, September, 25th, 24 Janitors graduated from the Green Janitor Education Program (GJEP) at the Schaumburg Corporate Center. Glenstar Property Management staff and ABM leadership gathered to celebrate the graduates and hear directly from members on how the course grew their knowledge around sustainability, and how they can apply it to the day-to-day care of the building. "We're so proud of our staff here. This is one of the most beautiful spaces we've worked in, and we have our janitorial crew to thank for that" -Glenstar management staff.

GJEP is a 15-week course that focuses on building sustainability, energy and water conservation, safety, green cleaning practices, and community building, and is one of the many benefits for Local 1 commercial janitors offered by the SEIU Local 1 & BOMA/Chicago Training and Legal Fund.

This recent graduation marks a total of 283 green janitor graduates! CONGRATS, GRADS! 🎉

BIG NEWS from St. Louis! The Board of Aldermen just passed a resolution congratulating SEIU Local 1 security officers at GardaWorld on winning their first union contract!

These officers stood together, fought for their voices to be heard, and won. Congratulations to every member who made this victory possible!

In Cleveland, SEIU Local 1 members, including janitors, security officers, groundskeepers and engineers at Severance Music Center, are standing in solidarity with Cleveland Orchestra musicians as they strike today.

Over the last two days, SEIU Local 1 member leaders from six different companies working across Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and Chicago’s Midway Airport came together for their annual steward training. These leaders learned about their contract, expanded their organizing and problem solving skills, and learned how to talk about the COPE political fund to their coworkers.

SEIU Local 1 members and leaders at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport met with Ohio gubernatorial candidate and labor champion Dr. Amy Acton

During the discussion, Local 1 airport workers had the opportunity to share what a day in the life of an airport worker really looks like, speaking about their experiences on the job and the challenges they face every day.

Dr. Acton also rode the RTA Rapid with Local 1 members who rely on public transportation to get home from work. By experiencing their commute firsthand, Dr. Acton saw the importance of reliable public transportation for workers who keep Cleveland’s airports running every day.

Local 1 Members also spoke with Dr. Acton about the issues that matter most to workers and their families. Dr. Acton stands with working people and believes their voices deserve a seat at the table.

When janitors, security officers, airport workers, arena workers, and more have a seat at the table, we can make sure our experiences, priorities, and voices help shape an Ohio where working families can thrive, not just survive.

At a time when working families are already stretching every paycheck to cover housing, groceries, utilities, and everything else, we should be making life more secure, not less. Instead, Medicaid changes are projected to leave millions more people uninsured, the enhanced ACA tax credits that helped millions afford coverage were allowed to expire, and now hundreds of thousands more are seeing their coverage canceled.
