My neighbor stole the whole harvest from my garden — instead of screaming, I did something smarter to teach her a lesson.
My husband, Daniel, died twelve days before our apple harvest.
He had tended those trees his whole life, pruning every branch by hand and teaching our son, Ben, how to know when the fruit was ripe.
"These trees will keep feeding you, even after I’m gone," he once told him.
I never imagined how quickly those words would matter.
When we returned from Daniel’s funeral, I was carrying our sleeping 3-year-old daughter while Ben held his father’s old cap.
Then I heard a branch crack.
Our 50-year-old neighbor, Monica, was straddling the fence, her floral blouse caught on a nail. Two bags beside her bulged with apples and pears.
"What are you doing?" I cried.
She hardly looked embarrassed.
"Don’t be selfish, Claire. I’m going to sell it. I need the cash."
"My children eat those. Their father grew them."
Monica rolled her eyes.
"Well, he’s not here anymore, is he? They’ll only rot."
I could barely keep myself from yelling.
"These aren’t your trees, and this isn’t your property. Don’t you dare step onto my land again," I said.
I ordered her off my property, and she walked away muttering that grief had made me "hysterical."
The following morning, Ben woke me before sunrise.
"Mom… come outside. I heard a frightening noise, and it woke me up."
I kissed his forehead and went downstairs.
But nothing could have prepared me for what I found there.
Every tree was stripped bare. Broken twigs covered the grass, and Daniel’s wooden ladder rested beside the fence.
Something inside me shattered.
I had no question who had done it. The lights in Monica’s windows were on despite the early hour.
So she obviously wasn’t going to respond to politeness.
And I wasn’t about to let anyone dishonor my husband’s memory — even if some people thought what I planned was too much.
Hours later, I did something in Monica’s front yard.
When she stepped outside and spotted it, she screamed so loudly that the whole neighborhood came running to see what had happened. ㅤㅤ
