🍄🐷 A family that spent 30 years raising pigs in Iowa just converted their farm into a mushroom operation. And it’s one of the more hopeful food stories we’ve come across in a while. The Faaborgs ran a concentrated animal feeding operation housing 8,000 pigs a year. Their five kids grew up working on it. But something shifted, and in 2021 they started working with @thetransfarmationproject, an organisation that helps farmers move away from industrial animal agriculture toward growing food for human consumption. By 2022, they’d decided to stop raising pigs altogether. A pilot mushroom project followed in 2023, then a full barn conversion. Today, they’re selling fresh mushrooms, tinctures, jerky, coffee, and hot chocolate blends at their @1100farm. A New York Times feature sent nearly 1,000 orders their way in the first few days alone. 🌿 The location matters. Iowa is the US’s factory farming heartland: over 15,000 CAFOs, a hog population seven times larger than its human one, and 300 million lbs of manure produced every single day. The toll on waterways, air quality, and public health has been enormous. That’s precisely why Transfarmation chose Iowa for its second demonstration hub, to show that transitioning away from factory farming is already working for real farming families. Hosted at the Chandler Museum, this special event will invite guests to experience Ocatilla: Frank Lloyd Wright’s Lost Desert Masterpiece in a festive and intimate setting. At the center of the exhibition is a full-scale reconstruction of one of Wright’s 1929 Ocatilla cabins, accompanied by rare archival materials, historic photographs, original objects, drawings, and film footage. Together, these elements reveal how Wright’s brief desert encampment helped transform his ideas about architecture, landscape, and life in the American Southwest.

More than a memorable evening, this event is an opportunity to support the important work of OA+D. Proceeds will advance the organization’s ongoing efforts to preserve, protect, research, and share the history of organic architecture and design through archival stewardship, exhibitions, publications, and public programs.
