Important Notice for International Students in the United States
On July 16, 2026, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced a final rule ending the “duration of status” system.
The rule applies to F, J, and I visa holders.
F-1 students and J-1 exchange visitors will be admitted for the length of their program.
The maximum admission period will generally be four years.
Students who need more time must apply to USCIS for an Extension of Stay.
The extension process may include biometric checks, background checks, and fraud screening.
The F-1 grace period after graduation will be reduced from 60 days to 30 days.
The rule will also place restrictions on changing programs or academic levels.
The rule is not effective immediately.
It will take effect 60 days after publication in the Federal Register.
Current visa holders will also move into the new fixed-admission system.
