Timing is everything in canine heatstroke care, speaker says Emergency veterinarian Dr. Erik Zager warned that heatstroke in dogs is a fast-moving, "septic-like" emergency affecting multiple organs. His talk at AVMA Convention 2026 covered predisposing factors, clinical signs, and treatment protocols.

And yet another. This is so concerning the numbers of rabid bats recently. Throughout the suburbs. They fly so closer than you think.. Keep.your pets protected. And in doing so we protect everyone else.

A bat found in the 1000 block of Worthington Dr. in Hoffman Estates on Sept. 2 has tested positive for rabies, according to Cook County Animal and Rabies Control officials.

The public is advised not to handle bats or any other wild animals. Report dead bats or skunks on private properties or on roadways by calling Cook County Animal and Rabies Control at (708) 974-6140.

Animal control officials ask anyone who has been bitten by a bat or has had potential exposure to a bat to contact a medical provider. Residents are reminded to make sure pets are current on their rabies vaccinations and to keep dogs, cats and ferrets on a leash or supervised outdoors.

Stay safe and keep your animals safe. These are popping up more and more. Bats fly so If there were 5 in Dupage and one in Cook these are clusters. Indoor is possible thru chimney's and such. Cats being indoor only are still at risk. VACCINATE YOUR PETS.

6 bats have tested positive for rabies—4 of those cases were confirmed just within the last week.

Rabies is a deadly virus, so it is important to protect your pets and yourself:

• Keep pets up to date on their rabies vaccinations. Even indoor pets can be exposed if a bat enters your home.

• Never touch a bat—even if it appears injured or unable to fly. If you find a bat in your home or suspect contact with a human or pet, call your non-emergency police for assistance.

• Stay informed. The DuPage County Health Department has issued a public alert about preventing rabies.
