Some stories are bigger than any one person, and I’m grateful to have been a small part of this one.

AI can create a design in seconds. But can it inherit a memory? Can it carry a grandmother’s story? Can it hold a homeland?

These are the questions I explored in my recent PechaKucha presentation.

As someone whose work is rooted in Palestinian embroidery, heritage, and storytelling, I don’t see fashion as fabric.
I see it as identity.

A record of where we’ve been.

A reminder of who we are.

And sometimes, a way of preserving what we refuse to lose.

I wasn’t able to attend in person, but I was grateful that my presentation could still be shared with the audience.

Now I want to ask you:

In a world where almost anything can be generated instantly, what things should always remain human?

we are giving you a choice.

Black on black — why did we do that?
Are we changing heritage?

Tatreez has never been static.
It has always reflected women’s lives and social realities.

Black fabric → maturity, strength
White fabric → youth and beginnings
Red embroidery → marriage, life
Blue embroidery → loss, mourning

Tatreez is an encyclopedia worn on the body.
A language of identity, place, and time ,
too deep to fit in one post.

So in October 2023, we returned to the roots of what tatreez truly is:

A voice.

Black on black was not a trend.
It was emotion.
It was grief.
It was psychological truth.
It reflected the state we were living in — not only as Arabs, but as human beings.

We spoke through fashion.
For ourselves.
For many of you who felt the same.

But tatreez does not stop at memory.
It evolves with history.

So we moved to the next step.

Together with powerful women, we began creating new motifs — documenting the present, not only the past.
Symbols of this era.
This pain.
This resilience.
These years that changed us.

Because tatreez is not decoration.

It is documentation.

It once told the story of a woman’s life.
Today, it tells the story of a people living through history.

Her dress still speaks.
Now the question is ; what do you want yours to say?
