A viral incident that shocked Chicagoans and was initially condemned by city leaders as a racist hate crime took an unexpected turn. A 21-year-old University of Illinois Chicago student has come forward to claim responsibility for lighting a cross on fire in Grant Park.
Despite the deep historical association of cross burnings with white supremacy and the K*K, the student insists his actions were not racially motivated. Instead, he claims it was a political protest directed at the Trump administration and “AGA Christian nationalist supporters,” even placing a red hat on the cross to symbolize a MAGA hat.
While city leaders and local activists previously expressed outrage over the display, the student has apologized to those offended but maintains his protest was purely anti-Trump.
What do you think about this explanation? Can a political protest ever separate itself from such a historically charged symbol?

The legal framework surrounding local equity initiatives is facing its most significant test.
The U.S. Department of Justice has formally intervened in the ongoing lawsuit against Evanston, Illinois’ municipal reparations program.
Established in 2021 as the first initiative of its kind in the United States, the program allocates $25,000 grants to eligible Black residents and their descendants to address historical housing discrimination.
Funded via local cannabis tax revenue, the city has successfully distributed more than $7 million to date.
The Justice Department’s recent filing supports a class-action lawsuit arguing that the race-based qualification criteria violate the Equal Protection Clause of the U.S. Constitution.
The outcome of this case is expected to set a major legal precedent for similar municipal task forces and equity commissions nationwide.

The beauty community spoke, and Patrick Ta responded.
Following intense backlash over his new “Transition Blush,” Ta addressed accusations of profiting off a technique popularized by TikTok creator without proper recognition.
In a newly released statement, Ta emphasized his respect for Esther and admitted that the controversy highlights a much larger issue: how Black creators continuously shape beauty trends without receiving the attribution or rewards they deserve.

The America’s Next Top Model creator, Tyra Banks, has filed a massive lawsuit against Netflix, alleging the streamer used “surgical manipulation” and selective editing in the docuseries Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model to manufacture a false, defamatory narrative against her.
According to court documents, Banks sat down for a raw, 3.5-hour interview to take accountability for past ANTM controversies—but claims producers chopped it down to just 16 minutes, leaving her actual accountability on the cutting room floor.
The suit claims the documentary was edited to falsely imply she knowingly allowed a contestant to be sexually assaulted and simply “forgot” about it.
With public backlash spilling over to her businesses, Tyra is fighting back to clear her name. Is this Netflix’s biggest reality check yet? 👇 Drop your thoughts below!
