Psychotic Distraction

Out of the office this week, DJ Stevo from The Friday Afternoon Happy Hour filling in today on CHIRP Radio 107.1FM 3:00pm - 6:00pm CT.

Day #151

Bl'ast / Blood! / Southern Lord / 2013

Remixed/remastered version of the Santa Cruz CA hardcore band's 1987 It's In My Blood album. William Duvall (now of Alice in Chains) played 2nd guitar on the original recording, but his tracks were removed when he left the band prior to the album's release. This version includes Duvall's guitar tracks, and it sounds AMAZING. I still have my original SST cassette which I played nonstop in high school. Bl'ast is still semi-active and released an incredible split with Eyehategod in 2016. RIYL: Damaged-era Black Flag, early Die Kreuzen, Fu**ed Up, etc.

Day #150

Blacktop / I Got a Baaad Feelin' About This / In the Red / 1994

Short-lived primal garage quartet from Detroit MI fronted by Mick Collins (The Gories, Dirtbombs, etc) with members of The Hex Dispensers, '68 Comeback, Fireworks, etc. RIYL: any of the aforementioned bands.

Day #149

Blacklisted / Heavier Than Heaven, Lonelier Than God / Deathwish / 2008

Sophomore album from Philadelphia PA metallic hardcore band, active 2003 - 2018. Recorded by Kurt Ballou at Godcity so you know it sounds 🔥
RIYL: Converge, Trap Them, The Bronx, etc.

Day #148

Black Shampoo / Original Motion Picture Soundtrack / DPI / 1976 (2007 issue)

Gerald Lee soundtrack to the Greydon Clark blaxploitation classic. A small group of high school friends and I have a LONG history with this movie/soundtrack. On December 26 1988 we rented Black Shampoo on VHS from the local Blockbuster and the lives of three suburban Detroit sixteen year olds were permanently changed. Every year since, we've gathered (either in person or via Kast) on December 26 for our annual viewing. It's not hyperbole to say that I've seen this movie well over 100 times and can recite every line from front to back. Mike White of The Projection Booth Podcast does a thorough telling in his 2010 book "Impossibly Funky: A Cashiers Du Cinemart Collection" (link in comments). Highest recommendation ever for fans of the genre.

Day #147

Blackdeath / Bottomless Armageddon / Faustian / 2004

Virtually unlistenable black metal from Russia, est. 1998/still active. There's not one intelligible lyric or discernible chord on the entire album, but I'm sure there's some 17 year old kid in his parent's suburban basement somewhere that thinks this is the pinnacle of TRVE KVLT METAL. I think I picked this up in the dollar bin at Reckless Records a few years back.
