As National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week comes to a close, we will continue speaking up for the importance of adult education and making sure our learners’ voices are heard. 🎤📚

Yesterday, we put that into action by joining other members of the Coalition to Sustain Adult Education in Chicago for a rally and press conference. Together, we called on Illinois elected leaders for more local funding to keep adult literacy programs accessible to learners at all levels.

A special thank you to Senator Graciela Guzmán and Representative Theresa Mah for showing up and supporting adult education!

Books for Our Families! 📚

This week, our students took a walking trip to Open Books in North Lawndale to pick out books for themselves and their children as part of our Adult Education and Family Literacy Week celebration!

Our students had the opportunity to choose books for themselves and their children. They loved walking over, exploring the books, and choosing something special to take home. It was wonderful to see how excited they were to find books they could enjoy with their families.

Family literacy is an important part of supporting lifelong learning. When adults and children have opportunities to read and learn together, it helps make literacy a part of everyday family life.

A big thank you to Open Books for welcoming us and allowing our students to take books home at no cost! 📖✨

As we continue celebrating Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, our students, instructors, and tutors joined the Coalition to Sustain Adult Education in Chicago for a press conference and rally at the Federal Plaza highlighting the importance of adult education.

Our students brought posters with personal messages sharing what adult education means to them and why these programs matter.

We’re proud of everyone for showing up, sharing their voices, and standing together in support of adult education!

The Learning Center was proud to join the Coalition to Sustain Adult Education in Chicago today for a press conference and rally during Adult Education and Family Literacy Week! 📚

We joined 90+ adult education advocates, learners, teachers, and community organizations to highlight the importance of adult literacy education and call for continued investment in programs that support adult learners across Illinois. ✏️📖

📚 AEFL Week is in full swing at The Learning Center!

As we get ready for Thursday’s press conference at Federal Plaza, our students made their own posters to bring along and display at the event. It was a great way for students to share their experiences, goals, and what adult education means to them.

The Learning Center is heading to Federal Plaza for a press conference celebrating Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, hosted by Literacy Works through the Coalition to Sustain Adult Education.

Students, instructors, community organizations, and elected officials will come together to highlight the need for more funding, recognition, and educational access for adult learners across Illinois.

We’re kicking off Adult Education and Family Literacy (AEFL) Week at The Learning Center!

Today, we started the week by asking our students to share their goals and what motivates them to keep showing up and working toward their education.

From earning a high school equivalency to improving reading and math skills, learning English, continuing their education, or simply building more confidence, every student has their own reason for being here.

We put their goals and motivations together on our “Why I Show Up” Wall as a reminder that behind every student is a goal, a reason, and a story.

We’re proud to celebrate our students this week and the many reasons they continue to show up, learn, and move forward.

Congratulations to Dijon! 🥳

He came in with a goal and worked hard to make it happen. In just one semester, he earned his HSE diploma! We are so proud of him and all the hard work he put in to reach this goal.

We are so proud of Jennifer for reaching her goal of earning her High School Equivalency Diploma before welcoming her second baby! 🎉 She worked hard and made it happen!

We’re so happy to celebrate this accomplishment with her and wish her and her growing family all the best! ✨

It’s been a busy summer of getting out into the community! ☀️📚 We’ve been tabling at resource fairs and local libraries, including our first time at the Cicero Public Library!

We’re happy to connect with our neighboring communities and share more about The Learning Center and our free programs. 💙
