Meta's chief AI officer has posted more than 300 times on X since Muse, its personal AI agent, launched. The promo strategy is increasingly cheeky.

A legion of side hustlers are making money through a stealth marketing method called "UGC," or user-generated content.

The posts look like everyday TikTok or Instagram fodder, not paid ads. Occasionally, they include hashtags with “ad” or “partner” after the brand name, but usually don’t.

Though undisclosed ads violate community guidelines on TikTok, Meta Platforms and YouTube—as well as Federal Trade Commission rules—the ecosystem is flourishing on each platform.

Conditions are ripe for this fast-growing gig market: AI has fueled a boom in consumer software startups hungry for cheap marketing. And social-media algorithms now drive content more based on users’ interest and less according to a creator’s follower count. That’s boosting the reach of small creators.

“We’re trying to carve out this new type of labor force,” said Nick Lawton, the chief executive of Sideshift, a UGC creator marketplace that says it has more than one million registered creator accounts.

“Take regular everyday people, pay them $20 a video, have them post an extreme amount.”

Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned this week, saying his former employer and its rival OpenAI are racing to build technologies that “could kill us all by the end of the decade.”

In case anyone thought Coxon was alone in his views, a current Anthropic employee chimed in minutes later to confirm.

“We really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans!” wrote Evan Hubinger, whose job at Anthropic is to lead research about steering and controlling future artificial-intelligence systems. Hubinger put the extinction risk over the next decade at over 10%.
