Introducing AWARE-AF: a charge⚡ to raise awareness.

Here’s why:
An estimated 8-12 million Americans are living with peripheral artery disease (PAD), yet nearly 70% of Americans have never heard of it. PAD contributes to approximately 400 amputations every day in the U.S.

Know the symptoms:
Pain or cramping while walking (claudication); pain in toes or feet while resting; sores on toes or feet that won’t heal; leg numbness or weakness; coldness in the lower leg or foot; change in skin color; slow nail or hair growth on legs

Know the risk factors:
Age 60+; smoking; diabetes; high blood pressure; family history of PAD; high cholesterol; obesity; kidney disease

Know how PAD is diagnosed:
The ankle-brachial index (ABI) is a simple, noninvasive test that compares blood pressure at the ankle with blood pressure in the arm.

And know when to refer:
If you suspect a patient might have PAD, refer them to a vascular surgeon.

Vascular surgeons are the only specialists trained to diagnose and treat the full spectrum of vascular diseases. They can provide treatments, including medication, minimally invasive procedures and, if needed, open surgery.

Vascular surgeons encounter a wide range of consults — these are some of the most common. 🩺
