Meet this year’s summer interns! Our firehouse is full of amazing talent this summer and we’d love for you to meet a small team of folks who are helping us move our work forward.

Last week, we took a trip to our neighbor’s Su Casa Liberation Landing to learn more about the beautiful work they help lead, the ways in which they show up for community, and how we can better support their efforts. Su Casa has a long history of serving the revolutionary community that find their ways through their doors. Through housing, community gardening, sharing meals, a free store, and even a library, Su Casa meets several community needs.

We not only learned about Su Casa’s history and trajectory, but were able to support with tasks like cleaning up their boarding rooms, organizing donations for the free store and toy room, and even got to support with farm work. We enjoyed taking home some squash blossoms and zucchini to make delicious zucchini fritters.

The Cloud Room is a carefully curated library that speaks to Su Casa’s values. Folks are able to read all about organizing and abolitionism, Chicago history, spirituality, family values and youth development, Earth stewardship, and much more. It’s truly a place where one can imagine the world they wish to see.

Su Casa’s free store runs on gently donated items that can help other families in need. Whether you’re looking for somewhere to donate items, donate your time, or are in need of things like clothing and personal care items, Su Casa has something for everyone.

We are half way through our this years’s Urban Sustainability Youth Culinary Program! 👩🏽‍🍳

For 6 six weeks, Youth from across the city are coming together to learn about circular economies, environmental justice, sustainability, and all things FOOD!🍱

From building and growing in their own garden beds, to learning from food professionals like Harold Chapman, this year’s cohort has been busy. They’re learning and sharing new recipes, conocimientos, and friendships. Thank you to all of our partners who have supported the program this year.

Let there be [natural] light! 🌞 for many years, the windows on this beautiful building were bricked up — blocking the sun from entering the first floor. This made our retail space feel darker, sometimes colder, and overall, not very welcoming to our neighbors. We always dreamed of what it would look like to have windows again, and were delighted to share that dream has come true! 🥹

Our first floor has brand new windows letting the sun rays in and letting us see out into our neighborhood 💚 becoming a more welcoming sight for everyone passing by. While renovations are still ongoing and much more work is still left to be done, these beautiful new windows have already made our historic firehouse feel like a brand new space ✨

Come see the many changes we’ve undertaken any Friday and Saturday. We’re open 11-5pm, offering fresh and seasonal produce at a bargain and accepting your weekly food scraps for freeeeeee.
