Lots of thoughts on this day… September 11th.
I remember waking up in New York that morning and hearing the news about an “accident” that had taken place at the World Trade Center. Only a few minutes later, the second tower was hit, and we knew this was no accident.
What followed is difficult to put into words ...even after all these years. The disbelief, the fear, the confusion, and then the realisation ...of how many lives were being lost only a few miles away. New York suddenly felt completely still and yet overwhelmingly alive at the same time.
I remember the smoke, the sirens, the faces of people on the streets, strangers talking to one another, trying to understand what had just happened. There was a moment of unity . And I remember how, in the days that followed, this enormous city somehow became very small. People looked after each other. They stopped and listened. They helped strangers. There was a sense that, for a moment, all the things that normally divided us simply didn’t matter.
Twenty-five years later, the images of that morning remain impossible to forget. So do the nearly 3,000 lives that were lost, the families whose lives changed forever, and the extraordinary courage of the firefighters, police officers, first responders, medical workers, and ordinary New Yorkers who ran toward danger to help others.
For those of us who were in New York that day and for so many around the world, September 11 will never be just a date in history. It is a memory we will always carry with us.
Today, I remember New York. I remember those we lost. And I remember the humanity that emerged from one of our darkest days.
Never forget.

PRESIDENT’S PLAYLIST
We know them as early US presidents, statesmen, commanders, and political figures, but did you know that many were also music aficionados and talented musicians in their own right?
Presented in conjunction with the Chicago History Museum exhibition “Threads of a Nation: Preserving Presidential Clothing” our opening concert of the season on October 7th, 2026 discovers the musical tastes of America’s presidents, including Thomas Jefferson, an accomplished violinist, and John Quincy Adams, who was said to be a remarkably skilled flutist.
Featuring works by Haydn, Bach, Corelli, Handel, and Mozart, the evening brings together multi-Grammy-nominated violinist Philippe Quint, Lyric Opera of Chicago principal players violist Carol Cook and cellist Calum Cook, award winning pianist Jessica Choe, and rising young star flutist Hannah Horgan of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra.
