Yesterday, I met with an 89-year-old gentleman in Palatine—and the conversation reminded me exactly why I enjoy what I do.

When I arrived, he invited me into his beautiful four-season room. We sat down at the table, and I asked to see a recent ComEd bill so I could begin designing a solar plan for his home.

He didn’t have the actual bill, but he did have something even more impressive: a freshly printed spreadsheet detailing every section of his ComEd bills from the past 13 months.

As I entered the information, I asked him:

“What is the main reason you’re considering solar? Is it the potential monthly savings and battery protection with no money out of pocket required? Is it the environmental benefit for your children and grandchildren? Or are you concerned about future energy costs and looking for more price control?”

He paused for a moment and then said:

“Jason, I’m 89 years old, and I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be living here. My wife is 88, and we’ve lived in this home for more than 44 years. Someday, either I will sell this house or my children will. This would be considered a starter home for the next family, and whoever buys it will be very fortunate to have the benefits of solar.”

Luckily, I was already sitting down—because that answer nearly knocked me over.

Here was an 89-year-old homeowner thinking beyond himself and recognizing the challenges future homeowners may face. He understands that electricity costs will likely continue rising as demand increases from data centers, new subdivisions, multifamily developments, power-plant closures, and an increasingly strained electrical grid.

He then explained that his roof had been replaced only three weeks earlier. The old roof had been the main reason he hadn’t moved forward with solar sooner.

Now that the new roof was complete, he felt it was finally time.

We also had an honest conversation about what solar could mean when the home is eventually sold. Yes, solar may not appeal to every buyer—but it may make the home more attractive to buyers who value lower energy costs, battery-backup protection, and greater reliability.

That could include someone who works from home, a family with medical equipment that depends on electricity, or simply a homeowner who wants peace of mind knowing their refrigerator, freezer, internet, sump pump and essential devices can remain powered during an outage.
