On the Morality of Using AI to Advance Worker Safety 12/02/2025

At VelocityEHS, we’re proud to have leaders who don’t just follow the conversation around AI and safety — they redefine it.

Our Senior Vice President & Chief AI Officer Julia Penfield, Ph.D., recently shared an important video on her LinkedIn page — one that anyone responsible for worker safety should watch.

During a recent presentation to EHS professionals, she asked a simple but powerful question: Is it moral to use AI to improve worker safety?

Drawing from more than two decades of data, she highlights a sobering truth: while overall workplace injuries continue to decline, Serious Injuries and Fatalities (SIFs) have remained virtually unchanged. The plateau is real; and it’s not acceptable.

She outlines a few reasons SIFs aren't dropping: administrative overload, expert shortages, hidden risks buried in near-misses, and inconsistent root-cause data. She shows how human-led, ethical AI can finally help safety professionals break through these barriers. Not by replacing them, but by amplifying their judgment, bandwidth, and impact.

She ends her talk with a powerful answer to her original question: Is it moral not to use AI? Because accepting the status quo means accepting preventable harm.

Her message challenges all of us to think differently about safety, ethics, and technology.
