Let’s Talk Law! We’re kicking off our new series with Ohio House Bill 492, which takes effect Oct. 6, 2026.

The new law adds penalties for interfering with an officer making a motor vehicle-related arrest. It also changes what may be required of passengers during a traffic stop. If an officer reasonably suspects a passenger of certain traffic or vehicle violations, the passenger may have to provide their name, date of birth and address.

Protect yourself now. Handle the legal issues later. If you think your rights are being violated during a stop, the side of the road isn’t the place to argue about it. Stay calm, don’t interfere and don’t give false information. If you don’t consent to a search, you can say so.

If you believe your rights were violated, talk to an attorney afterward. There may be ways to challenge what happened in court or file a complaint.
