One of the most useful things a financial plan can do is take the pressure off individual decisions. When you know where you are headed and why, the day-to-day noise tends to feel a lot more manageable.

That is the goal. Not a perfect prediction of the future, but a clear enough framework that you can make confident decisions without second-guessing every move.

Is your current plan giving you that kind of clarity?

If your compensation includes RSUs, stock options, or a deferred comp plan, the fourth quarter tends to be where the decisions get real. Vesting dates, exercise windows, and year-end tax implications all converge in a way that rewards having a plan in place before October.

A few questions worth asking now:

1. What is vesting before December 31 and what are the tax consequences?
2. Is your hold or sell decision part of a broader strategy or made in the moment?
3. Does your financial plan account for the concentration risk that builds over time?

Doug Loftus, CFP® and Co-Founder of Wealth Dimensions, has spent four decades helping families navigate the decisions that matter most. His approach has always been the same: understand what the client actually values, build a plan around that, and make sure every piece of it is connected.

A few things clients tend to appreciate about Doug's approach:

♦ He has seen enough market cycles and life transitions to bring genuine perspective to complex decisions.
♦ He focuses on what the plan needs to accomplish, not just what it looks like on paper.
♦ He built this firm on the belief that good advice and the client's best interest should always point in the same direction.

A better job offer arrives. Then you remember the stock you would leave behind, and the decision gets complicated fast.

Unvested equity can feel like a vague reason to stay. It shouldn’t be. Put a real number on what you would forfeit, then compare it with the equity and compensation you are receiving in the new offer.
From there, you can see whether there is a meaningful gap to negotiate and make an informed decision about vested options, exercise deadlines, and potential tax consequences before you give notice.

Our latest article looks at the equity math behind a job change and how to keep golden handcuffs from making the decision for you.

For anyone within five to ten years of retirement, fall is a good time to pressure-test the plan. Not because anything is wrong, but because the decisions made in this window tend to have an outsized effect on what retirement actually looks like.

A few things worth revisiting before year end:

1. Is your projected retirement income still aligned with what you want life to cost?
2. Have you modeled Social Security timing in the context of your full plan?
3. Are your investment accounts positioned appropriately for where you are in the timeline?
4. Does your plan account for healthcare costs before Medicare eligibility?

Most people do not lack the intention to get their finances in order. What they lack is a clear starting point.

If you have been circling around a decision — a retirement timeline, an estate plan that needs updating, an investment strategy that no longer fits — the starting point is usually simpler than it feels.

A single conversation tends to clarify more than months of thinking about it alone.

If you are ready to start that conversation: https://go.wealthdimensions.com/consult-with-wealth-dimensions

Your CPA knows your tax return. Your attorney knows your estate documents. Your advisor knows your portfolio.

But do they know each other?

That gap is where things quietly slip. Not dramatically, and usually not all at once.

▶ An estate document that never got updated after a change in the plan.

▶ A portfolio that is not as tax efficient as it could be.

▶ A Roth conversion window that came and went.

The weeks right after tax season are one of the best times to close that gap. Your return is a real snapshot of your income, your gains, and your account structure. That information should not sit in one file. It should inform decisions across your whole plan.

At Wealth Dimensions, we spearhead those conversations so you are not the one connecting the dots.

Most tax planning that actually makes a difference happens before December, not during it. By the time you are sitting across from your CPA in tax season, the window for meaningful moves has usually already closed.

A few things worth looking at now:

1. Is your withholding accurate, or are you heading toward a surprise bill or a larger refund than intended?
2. Are there loss harvesting opportunities worth reviewing before year end?
3. Have you thought about Roth conversion timing in the context of your current income?
4. Is your charitable giving strategy connected to your tax plan?

September has a way of arriving quickly. The kids are back in school, summer is officially behind us, and the last quarter of the year is closer than it feels.

For a lot of families, fall is when the most important financial decisions of the year actually get made. Tax moves, year-end gifting, retirement contributions, equity comp planning. The ones that benefit most from starting early rather than rushing in December.

This month we are focusing on what is worth your attention before the year closes out.
