Minimally-invasive, laser-assisted periodontal treatment can help you treat gum disease at any stage and improve your oral health. LANAP is a revolutionary new laser-assisted gum disease treatment. This periodontal therapy option uses advanced laser technology to gently remove bacteria and diseased tissue around the teeth, eliminating the need for more invasive procedures like traditional periodontal surgery.
Laser periodontal treatment has many benefits over traditional gum therapy and surgeries, including less bleeding since scalpels and sutures are not used, less pain and sensitivity of the teeth after treatment, minimal swelling and gum recession, and improved regeneration of bone around the teeth for a healthier smile. Come see us at Wessel Periodontics to learn more about LANAP and laser periodontal therapy and how it can help you achieve periodontal health!

September is Cholesterol Education Month. Gum disease can impact your heart health including your cholesterol. Researchers have uncovered oral bacteria in the fatty deposits of people with high cholesterol and clogged arteries, also known as atherosclerosis.
Another study showed that the presence of deep gum pockets was positively associated with higher cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol blood levels in men.
Keeping your gums healthy can help reduce your risk of high cholesterol and the problems associated with it. Come see us at Wessel Periodontics for all your periodontal treatment needs and to help keep your mouth and whole body healthy!

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in America. 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime.
High PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) levels may be a sign of prostate cancer or an enlarged prostate gland. Research has shown that men with gum disease have higher levels of PSA than men with only one of the conditions. This means that prostate health may be associated with periodontal health, and vice versa. Men with gum disease are at 14% higher risk of prostate cancer.
Like gum disease, prostate disease may be silent, which is why routine screening for prostate cancer and gum disease is key. Come see us at Wessel Periodontics for a comprehensive gum health exam and to keep your whole body healthy!

Gum disease is very common – in fact, over half of American adults have it to some degree. Gingivitis, which results in red, swollen and bleeding gums, is the earliest stage of gum disease and is completely reversible with routine dental cleanings and good home oral hygiene care. If left untreated gingivitis can progress to the more serious periodontitis, which is characterized by irreversible bone loss around teeth.
Gum disease, or periodontitis, can lead to a variety of issues not just for your smile, but also your entire body. Gum recession, loose teeth, and tooth loss can occur as gum disease progresses, and a growing body of research shows that gum disease is linked to serious health conditions such as heart attacks, diabetes, strokes, and certain types of cancers. Come see us at Wessel Periodontics to learn more about gum disease and for all of your gum treatment needs to keep your mouth and whole body healthy!

Gum recession can lead to tooth sensitivity, excess plaque build-up and potential for root decay and abrasion. Gum grafts are predictable procedures to cover exposed roots, increase thickness of gum tissue and eliminate sensitivity and other symptoms. Don't ignore gum recession; it can be easily treated and it doesn't have to be a painful experience!

Va**ng has grown in popularity over the last few years. It is seen by many as a 'healthy' alternative to smoking ci******es. By using e-ci******es, it’s believed that individuals will avoid many of the health complications associated with traditional to***co ci******es. Va**ng, however, can cause many negative health outcomes, especially in the oral cavity.
Va**ng has been shown to play a role in the initiation and progression of periodontal disease by altering the host response resulting in the release of inflammatory mediators and increases in bacteria known to cause gum disease. Clinical studies show negative effects of va**ng on periodontal health as well as less favorable response to periodontal treatment compared to non-smokers. Come see us at Wessel Periodontics to learn more about the effect of va**ng on your oral health and to ensure your mouth and body stay healthy!

Gum recession is extremely common and can be caused by many factors, such as improper or aggressive tooth brushing techniques. Gum recession results in loss of gum height and exposure of the tooth root surface. This can result in tooth sensitivity and damage to the tooth root as well as compromising the aesthetics of your smile.
Fortunately there are multiple options to treat gum recession, such as gum grafting, to cover up exposed root surfaces and make your mouth healthier. Gum grafting can be a minimally invasive procedure with a rapid recovery afterwards. Come see us at Wessel Periodontics to learn more about gum grafting options and how to best treat your gum recession!
