Media coverage has made it appear that organ procurement organizations, like Network for Hope, are killing people for their organs. That is absolutely not true.
In a letter to the editor published in the Wall Street Journal, Drs. Stephanie Pouch and Charles Strom reinforce the strict legal and ethical safeguards around organ donation. Organ donation never influences a patient's medical care.
As Drs. Pouch and Strom state, misinformation leads to less public trust in a system hundreds of thousands of Americans are depending on to save and heal their lives.

This Thing Called Life is almost BACK!
For eight years, the Rico Gunnell Sr. Memorial Blood Drive has brought people together around one goal: helping others.
That sense of community is at the center of the next episode of ‘This Thing Called Life’ host Andi Johnson sits down with the event’s founder and community partners from Network for Hope to talk about how the blood drive began, why it continues and the people who keep showing up year after year.
As Andi puts it, “Network for Hope is about community.”

When we filmed this conversation, Keegan had been waiting for a lifesaving double lung transplant since 2022.
A few weeks ago, Keegan and his family received the call they had been waiting for. At just 11 years old, Keegan received his lifesaving double lung transplant.
Today, we’re grateful to share this next chapter in Keegan’s journey and the hope made possible through organ donation.
Our CEO, Barry Massa, speaks directly about the intention to decertify Network for Hope, addresses recent reporting about our organization, and reinforces our commitment to maintaining trust in the life-saving work of organ donation and transplantation.
Our mission remains unchanged: to protect patients, honor donor heroes and their families, support those waiting for a life-saving transplant, and continue to strengthen the donation process.

Network for Hope CEO Barry Massa has been clear about our organization’s decision to appeal decertification and why he believes recent reporting does not tell the full story.
“What is occurring now is not an accurate portrayal of what Network for Hope is doing. And that is why we are appealing," he said.
During the appeals process, Network for Hope continues to operate as the organ procurement organization serving Kentucky and parts of Ohio, Indiana and West Virginia with no changes.
Our focus remains on the people waiting, donor heroes and their families, and the lifesaving work of organ donation and transplantation.

1,443 Kentuckians have removed themselves from the donor registry list in August alone.
The Eye Bank of Kentucky said if the number of donors continues to decline, those waiting for cornea transplant could see what is currently a 1-2 week wait turn into a 1-year wait.
Both situations are fueled by misinformation surrounding organ donation and the work Network for Hope does.
"The thing that hurts the most is those people waiting," Network for Hope CEO Barry Massa said.
"Pediatric donation is rare in and of itself... I would hate to hear that all this media and inaccurate stories has led to somebody dying on the wait list because of it. That'd be just absolutely terrible."
Two important facts mentioned in the article:
- What Secretary Kennedy said in the press conference August 5 for why he was decertifying Network for Hope is not what the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) made as a basis for decertification.
- The often-referenced case involving TJ Hoover, which was not a brain death case as misreported, was reviewed by CMS and closed in the spring of 2025.
