I was already halfway down Moyer Ave when Jacob yelled, “Race you to the creek!”

The sun was already dipping low, turning the pavement orange, and our bike chains rattled as we flew past the old Barnes house on the corner.

Nobody checked a clock. Nobody checked in. We just knew we had until the streetlights buzzed on. By the time I rolled back home, sweaty and covered in dust, the smell of dinner was drifting through our house and my only responsibility was washing my hands before I ate.

Back then, I couldn’t wait to grow up.

I thought being an adult meant freedom. No bedtime. No homework. My own money. My own car. My own rules.

What I didn’t understand was that I was already living some of the best parts of life.

Riding bikes until dark without a destination.

Lying on the living room floor on Saturday morning watching cartoons while the cereal got soggy.

Spending an entire summer day at the pool and coming home smelling like chlorine and sunshine.

Walking to the 7-11 with a pocket full of change, rich enough to buy some Hubba Bubba and a Slurpee.

Sitting on a curb with your friends talking about absolutely nothing but really talking about everything.

We were always in a hurry to get older because we thought adulthood was where life really began.

Then adulthood arrived: alarm clocks, bills, schedules, and calendars packed so tight that free time started feeling like a luxury.

Sometimes I’d trade all of it for one more evening when the only thing I had to worry about was whether I could squeeze in one more bike ride before the streetlights came on.

Funny how life works.

As kids, we spent years wishing our childhood away.

As adults, we spend years wishing we could visit it again.

And maybe that’s because the things we were so eager to leave behind were the very things that made life feel so simple, so free, and so unforgettable.
