When I saw the shot, I envisioned combining natural elements from the original photo with dreamy surreal pops of color. Originally I planned to keep the sky grey- but I couldn’t help myself 🌸💕🌺🐷💘

Ive always loved artwork that captures the personality of a room. Snapshots that narrate the setting- like a messy bedside table or the way the light hits the dust through the window in the afternoon. It’s like rereading a journal entry and remembering exactly how you felt at the time.

I don’t paint in watercolor too often but I love the energy of this one.

Christmas in July at Second April Studios was too fun. Live painting is always a thrill. It kind of feels like trying to parallel park while someone is cheering you on. There’s no time to overthink, only enough time to make a hundred tiny decisions and hope they all agree with each other by the end.

Thank you Tim Carmany for inviting me and taking care of the artists. It was an honor to paint alongside such a talented group. I somehow missed getting a photo of E r i k a K a t h e r i n e A r t’s piece but it is incredible and also pink 🌸

5 years ago, a collector saw a Napoleon painting someone else had commissioned and wanted his own piece of history painted in my style. He landed on Abe, and like the Napoleon piece, it was a subject I wouldn’t have normally decided to paint. But this piece cracked open a door I’ve kept returning to ever since. Historical figures show up in my work every now and again and I love the history lessons that come with each one.
