Over the past 30+ as a reporter, I’ve had the privilege to meet a lot of memorable people. One of my favorites was Frank Shomo. When I interviewed Frank in 1991 it was because he was the last survivor of the Johnstown Flood. The Johnstown Flood happened May 31, 1889. More than 2000 people were killed when a dam broke above Johnstown, PA. Frank was an infant, just 100 days old, and survived because his family lived up high on a hill.
When I interviewed Frank he was 102. He was bright and calm and kind. I left the interview thinking how lucky I was to have met him. A few weeks later I found a package on my desk at work. It was from Frank. Inside was a hand-made leather wallet. Frank made it and tooled my name into the leather. Tucked inside was a handwritten note and his business card. I’ve treasured that wallet ever since. Today is the 137th anniversary of the Johnstown Flood. Thinking of Frank. And thankful he survived. Learned today that Frank Shomo lived to 108. His obituary even made the New York Times. Rest in peace, Mr. Shomo. I treasure your wallet. And keep your memory in my heart.

Truly humbled to commemorate Memorial Day by paying tribute to the brave men and women who sacrificed everything for our nation.🇺🇸Our Daughters of the American Revolution chapter marched in the Strongsville parade and participated in the solemn ceremony to honor the ultimate heroes. Heartened by the presence of so many children at the ceremony who will carry on the Memorial Day tradition of remembrance.
