After years of my body and voice being sexualized, conditioned, and controlled by rules that told me who I was allowed to be, l've learned something.
My voice is powerful.
And that scares me.
It was almost easier when I wasn't allowed to sing in front of men.
It gave me an excuse not to try.Not to take up space.Not to risk being seen.
If I failed, I could blame the rules.
My freedom freed me of excuses and now I feel a responsibility to speak up, share, write, sing.
Not for a mission.Not for an institution.Not for someone else's comfort.
For me.
I've learned that passion is beautiful.Wildness is beautiful.Truth is beautiful.
And hearing me sing has been healing for people in ways I never expected.
I am not responsible for what a man thinks when he hears my voice.
I've learned that there are men out there who see me as a human being, who are moved by my voice, who encourage me to be myself, who see me as a whole being, not an obstacle.
I've learned that I'm allowed to want more for my life even when it's different than the people around me.

I can breathe again.
