Microplastics continue to surprise scientists.

A recent Chemistry World article detailed a growing trend of microplastics helping bacteria develop genes that resist antibiotics.

How does it work?

Microplastics provide surfaces for bacteria to form biofilms, sticky surfaces of microorganisms that allow them to more easily transfer resistance genes.

While researchers are still working to understand the full health impacts of microplastic exposure, findings like these underscore the need to keep studying, tracking, and reducing microplastic pollution.
