I’ve added a Personal Reflections category to the MPC blog because my work in psychology, mindfulness, and performance often leads me to questions about faith and service.

I want a place to explore those connections honestly and share what I’m learning along the way. These are my personal views, and I welcome thoughtful conversation. If a reflection speaks to your experience, I hope you’ll share it.

Sometimes noticing that we’ve drifted is the beginning of coming back. In prayer, we can turn toward God again. In performance, we can return to what’s in front of us.

I wrote about this overlap and why the act of returning matters in Prayer and Performance Mindfulness: The Gift of Returning on the MPC blog

Tonight we kick things off at the Caledonia YMCA, and next week we’re bringing Mental Game Ready to the Downtown YMCA in Columbus.

This 90-minute class is built for athletes, coaches, and parents who want practical tools for developing confidence, composure, focus, routines, and better performance under pressure.

📍 Caledonia YMCA — TONIGHT, Sept. 14 | 6:30–8:00 PM
📍 Downtown YMCA — Tuesday, Sept. 22 | 6:30–8:00 PM

If you can’t make it tonight, come join us Downtown next Tuesday. This isn’t just about playing better, it’s about helping athletes build skills they can carry into whatever comes next.

A 24/72 schedule gives firefighters more than additional time between shifts. It gives us an opportunity to organize performance training with greater intent.

Physical preparation matters. So do attention, decision-making, regulation, recovery, and readiness.

The goal is not more training. It is purposeful training. Blog Link:

Fire departments moving toward a 24/72 schedule have an opportunity to rethink more than the work calendar.

The real question is how we use that four-day cycle to deliberately develop firefighter performance. In my new blog, I lay out a 24/72 performance rhythm built around four objectives:

Shift Day: Perform & Manage
Day 1: Recover & Downshift
Day 2: Stress & Integrate
Day 3: Prepare & Sharpen

The emphasis is not just physical training. It is attention, decision-making, cognitive flexibility, regulation under pressure, recovery, and preparing the firefighter to return ready for the next shift.

If the job requires firefighters to think, adapt, communicate, and execute under stress, those skills deserve a place in the training cycle.

This is part of the problem with using “mental health” as a catch-all term. Not everything belongs in the same bucket.

Mental illness, mental distress, mental well-being, and mental performance are related, but they are not interchangeable. When we collapse all of it into one label, we create confusion about roles, scope, and who should be doing what.

Distress does not automatically equal disorder and performance work does not automatically become clinical work just because a person is struggling.

The point is not to minimize anyone’s role. We to be more precise. Better language leads to better role clarity, better referrals, and better support.

Know who you are bringing to the table so they can provide you the best service.

No screaming transformation sequence required.

Mental training is about making psychological skills more available when pressure makes performance harder.

Golden aura optional.

New MPC Blog: Sometimes the Missing Piece Really Is Mental Training

Mental training gets sold sometimes like a power-up: learn to breathe, visualize, think positively and suddenly you’re operating at another level.

That’s not how performance works.

The athlete may already have the strength, skill, conditioning, and technical preparation. The missing piece may be developing the attention, regulation, adaptability, and psychological skills that allow them to consistently access that preparation when pressure enters the environment.

And yes…there is a legitimate Super Saiyan discussion in this one.
