Remembering the Fifth Little Girl

Sarah Collins Rudolph, a 12-year-old little girl, was the sole survivor of the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, which rocked Birmingham and the nation on September 15, 1963.

The explosion, executed by four Ku Klux Klan members, killed Sarah's 14-year-old sister, Addie Mae Collins, as well as 11-year-old Denise McNair, 14-year-old Carole Robertson, and 14-year-old Cynthia Wesley.

Sarah was hospitalized for months and missed her sister's funeral. She was left with major shrapnel wounds and lost the vision in her right eye.

September 15th marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month. We take this opportunity to celebrate the beauty and brilliance of Hispanic and Latinx communities and the many ways their stories, cultures, and traditions enrich us all.

To everyone honoring where you come from while building where you’re going: we see you. At Ayoku, we honor the wisdom, traditions, joy, and creativity that remind us our well-being is deeply connected to how we care for one another.
