Electrical and Computer Engineering at Ohio State

Congratulations to our Electrical & Computer Engineering Professor & Chair Balasubramaniam Shanker, who has been appointed interim dean of the College of Engineering.

Shanker has begun his new role as of August 1st, 2026.
He succeeds Dean Ayanna Howard, who concludes her tenure at Ohio State on July 31 before she begins serving as the 12th president of Spelman College.

We are so excited for this next chapter, but we will miss him in the department!

On June 15th, the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor Jin Wang, Research Scientist Pengyu Fu and fellow academic team members were awarded the First-Place Prize Paper Award by the IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics (JESTPE). For their paper entitled, ““2-kV 1-MW 20000-r/min Integrated Modular Motor Drive for Electrified Aircraft Propulsion.”

Sanjay Krishna has been appointed senior associate vice president for Innovation and Strategic Ventures within the Enterprise for Research, Innovation and Knowledge. Krishna's appointment coincides with reorganization to better serve faculty innovators. He will officially start July 1st.

Under Krishna’s leadership, Ohio State will continue to build a robust, forward-looking innovation ecosystem that empowers researchers, accelerates discovery and delivers meaningful benefits to society.

On June 1st, Professor Shanker Balasubramaniam was reappointed Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at The Ohio State University.

Shanker has served as chair of the department since August 2022 where his commitment to excellence in education, research, and societal impact has remained unwavering.

Congratulations to Burn Jeng Lin, PhD, and Sue Huang Lin Endowed Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor Joel Johnson for his prestigious Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (IEEE GRSS) Golden Florin Award, honoring his contributions to research in microwave remote sensing.

Professor Johnson’s distinguished career spans over 35 years, with much of his research focused on microwave remote sensing of geophysical media, both active and passive, as well as the application of numerical techniques in electromagnetics to remote sensing problems.

The Golden Florin Award celebrates individuals who have made outstanding contributions to research in Passive Microwave Remote Sensing throughout their career. The Award includes an exact gold reproduction of the old golden florin, the coin first minted in Italy by the Florentine Republic in 1252, and a certificate.

Professor Sanjay Krishna, George R. Smith Professor of Engineering and a leader in the use of infrared imaging was recently featured on Ohio State's "Pass the Mic" series for his innovative research with implications for cancer detection, public safety and more.

Professor Krishna's commitment to academic excellence and improving human lives both in Ohio and globally is reflected in his research and faculty work at Ohio State.
