Happy Birthday, Sloopy! Our Great Aunt Dorothy Sloop
was born Sept 26, 1913 in Steubenville, OH. She learned to play piano at a very young age, from her father Fred Sloop aka “The Professor” who was organist of the silent films. She went on to travel with an all girl group called the Southland Rhythm Girls before becoming the house pianist at Dixie’s Bar of Music in New Orleans. She is the inspiration for the song “My Gal Sloopy,” which became “Hang on Sloopy,” the Ohio “State rock song” and OSU third quarter comeback attack song. Let this be a reminder to let your hair down and celebrate whatever side of town you’re from!
