More than a CENTURY of connecting communities – built in concrete! 💪

Our America250 historic feature series continues with the William Howard Taft Bridge in Washington, D.C. Completed in 1907, this landmark carries Connecticut Avenue over Rock Creek gorge, connecting Woodley Park and Kalorama.

Its Classical Revival design pairs unreinforced concrete arches with a reinforced concrete deck, showcasing the engineering and craftsmanship of its era. The bridge is "guarded" by four large male lions, two on each end of the bridge, each approximately 7 feet x 6.5 feet x 13 feet. Originally known as the Connecticut Avenue Bridge, it was renamed in 1931 to honor William Howard Taft.

🛹 Concrete is taking shape in Lorain.

Progress is underway at the new Lorain Skatepark, where Ohio Concrete Ready Mix Member Terminal Ready-Mix, Inc. is supplying concrete for the project.

One of the interesting parts of this build is the use of shotcrete, a low-slump concrete mix that can be pumped and sprayed onto vertical surfaces before being hand finished. That application makes it especially useful for creating the curves, transitions, walls, and other formed surfaces that bring a concrete skatepark to life.

It’s a great example of how the right concrete mix and application can take on some pretty unique shapes, and another look at the work Ohio Concrete Members are helping support in communities across the state.

👏 Great work to Terminal Ready Mix and the project teams bringing this new community space together.

A PENTAGON OF PURPOSE – Construction on the Pentagon began in September 1941, as the U.S. War Department faced an urgent need for a single building to house its rapidly expanding operations.

With steel in short supply, the Pentagon was built as a reinforced-concrete structure. Its foundation required 41,492 cast-in-place reinforced-concrete piles – together stretching more than 200 miles.

More than 15,000 workers labored around the clock, completing the Pentagon in just 16 months.

🇺🇸 America 250 | Ohio Concrete Spotlight
📍 Goodyear Airdock | Akron, Ohio

Built in 1929, the Goodyear Airdock helped establish Akron as a center of American aviation innovation. Originally constructed for building U.S. Navy airships, the massive facility became home to the construction of the USS Akron and USS Macon.

Measuring 1,175 feet long, 325 feet wide, and 211 feet high, the Airdock was the world’s largest building without interior supports when completed. Its enormous steel arches rest on concrete foundations designed to accommodate movement as temperatures change.

Nearly a century later, the Airdock remains one of Ohio’s most recognizable engineering landmarks and a reminder of the ambitious design and construction that helped shape American aviation history.

Another remarkable Ohio project we’re proud to feature as we celebrate:
250 Years of American Pride, Poured in Ohio.
