The Gambian government has agreed to investigate and prosecute the disappearance and killing of former parliamentarian Mahawa Cham within one year, under a settlement adopted by the ECOWAS Court of Justice.

The government will also compensate eight members of Cham’s family, locate, exhume and return his remains to them, and ensure the case against all alleged perpetrators is prosecuted to its conclusion.

The Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) concluded in 2021 that Cham was unlawfully disappeared and killed during the Jammeh era.

“Nobody can pay for a soul,” his son Lamin Cham said, adding that the family hopes the settlement will bring closure and justice after years of hardship.

Gambian singer Nyancho Apachaky has reached a YouTube milestone after his song “Wolulo” crossed two million views within two months of its July 4th release.

Nyancho becomes the second Gambian artist reported to have reached two million YouTube views in such a short period, after A2 Di Fulani’s “Ta Tewto” featuring Guinean artist Tati Tati achieved the feat in 2021.

“Wolulo” focuses on leadership, accountability and the struggles of ordinary people, including public servants who dedicate years to serving the country but may still retire into hardship.

Yemen’s Houthis, also known as Ansar Allah, have released footage showing their fighters inside the residence of Sultan al-Barakani, the speaker of Yemen’s internationally recognised parliament, after recent advances in the country’s south and west.

In recent weeks, the group pushed along Yemen’s Red Sea coast and captured Mocha, a strategic port near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, the narrow sea passage between Yemen and the Horn of Africa used by major international shipping routes.

Houthi forces also advanced around Taiz, one of Yemen’s largest cities, and captured Turbah, a key junction on the road linking Taiz with Aden, the southern city used as the temporary capital by Yemen’s internationally recognised government. They also took al-Safiyah and al-Mansora.

Saudi-backed government forces have since launched a counteroffensive and say they retook Dhubab, Mocha and several positions near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. Fighting continues around Taiz, while the Houthis dispute the scale of their territorial losses.

The Gambia’s electricity push now moves to installation after two brand-new generators with a combined capacity of 21 megawatts arrived at the Banjul port on Monday.

Vice President Mohammed B.S. Jallow, accompanied by cabinet ministers and other senior government officials, received the machines, saying “the Government is committed to ensuring a stable electricity supply.”

NAWEC Managing Director Gallo Saidy said installation and commissioning are expected to be completed by the end of October, a deadline that now puts the focus on how quickly the new capacity can be brought onto the national grid.

The United Democratic Party (UDP) has been accusing the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of failing to fully explain a 28,932 difference in figures from the 2026 Supplementary Voter Registration Exercise.

The IEC announced 212,095 registrations, while a dataset later provided to the UDP contained 183,163 voters.

The IEC insists there is no discrepancy, explaining that the 212,095 figure was raw data that included replacements, reprints, spoiled or damaged cards and multiple registrations before verification.

IEC Vice Chairman Cherno Jallow, however, acknowledged that the Commission should have responded to two formal letters from the UDP requesting detailed registration information, saying: “We still have plans to respond and we will respond because we have an obligation to do so.”

The UDP says it is not presenting the difference as proof of electoral malpractice but wants the figures fully explained and reconciled.

Saikou Camara, the UDP’s Administrative Secretary for Media and Communications, has also questioned why the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) has publicly responded to the party’s demands, asking: “Why is the NPP so uncomfortable with a simple demand for electoral transparency?”

A police prosecution officer has rejected corruption allegations over the detention of a Mercedes-Benz linked to a suspected goat theft case, saying he instead refused an alleged D10,000 bribe to secure the vehicle’s release.

Chief Inspector Kemo Y. Manneh said the accused approached him over the car and later offered him money. “Even if you offer me D25,000, I am not going to release this vehicle,” he said.

One of the suspects, Musa Sey, later described Manneh as “arrogant, corrupt, and disrespectful” in a Facebook post, while also stating that the officer rejected their D10,000 offer and insisted the matter be taken to court.

Police say the vehicle was allegedly used to transport a she-goat suspected to have been stolen, and investigators have recommended charges of possession of suspected stolen property and conspiracy.
