We believe science education should begin with wonder.

Our learners are immersed in science from a young age, asking questions, making observations, and discovering how the world around them works.

This week, we extracted chlorophyll from spinach and explored what happened when their sample was placed under UV light. What appeared green in visible light showed up red under UV light—leading to conversations about light, pigments, and the science behind what we see.

Hands-on experiments like this help young learners develop curiosity, critical thinking, and a genuine understanding of scientific concepts.

They're not just memorizing facts from a textbook; they're investigating, observing, and experiencing science for themselves.

Education is about more than academics.

At Willow Roots, we believe education should nurture the whole-child.

Yes, we teach reading, writing, mathematics, and science. But we also believe children need opportunities to learn how to communicate, collaborate, solve problems, navigate relationships, and contribute meaningfully to their community.

That's why our very own Courtesy and Grace curriculum is an intentional part of our everyday. We designed this curriculum with the whole-child in mind.

Our learners practice the skills that help them become thoughtful, capable people:

• How to respectfully communicate with others
• How to listen and consider another person's perspective
• How to think beyond their own wants and consider how their choices affect those around them
• How to navigate conflict and repair relationships
• How to care for shared spaces and materials
• How to demonstrate gratitude, responsibility, and kindness
• How to work together, disagree respectfully, and make thoughtful decisions

———

We want our learners to understand that being part of a community means more than simply having our own needs met. It means learning to notice when someone else needs help, making room for others, showing consideration, and recognizing that we all have a responsibility to one another.

These aren't lessons reserved for a once-a-week character class. They are woven into the everyday life of our school.

Through real experiences—working alongside one another on the farm, preparing meals in the kitchen, caring for animals, collaborating on projects, and navigating the ordinary challenges of childhood—students have opportunities to practice these skills in meaningful ways.

We want our learners to leave us not only academically prepared, but also confident in who they are, aware of how their actions affect others, and equipped to contribute positively to the world around them.

Because a successful education isn't just about what a child knows.

It's also about who they are becoming—and how they choose to treat the people around them

Why do so many learners dislike math?

It’s a subject many struggle to enjoy, and we believe part of the reason is simple: they don’t always see how it connects to their lives.

When math is reduced to equations on a worksheet, it can be difficult for learners to understand why they need to learn it. But when we show them REAL math—how they’ll use it with money, time, cooking, measuring, budgeting, building, and everyday problem-solving — the questions of “Why do I have to learn this?” begin to disappear.

Suddenly, they have a reason to solve the problem. They’re asking questions, thinking critically, working toward a solution, and realizing that math isn’t just something they have to learn for school — it’s a skill they’ll use for the rest of their lives.

When learners understand the purpose behind what they’re learning, learning becomes meaningful.

Due to popular demand, we're excited to offer a unique 2-day-a-week homeschool enrichment program designed to come alongside the incredible work you're already doing at home.

Our learners will grow in:

📚 Reading & math enrichment that complements your home curriculum—not replaces it.

🌱 Hands-on learning in the garden and on the farm, caring for animals and exploring the natural world.

🍞 Practical life skills through cooking, baking, and time in the kitchen.

🤝 A nurturing community where curiosity, confidence, and meaningful friendships can grow.
Our goal is to blend strong academic enrichment with real-world experiences that inspire a love of learning.

Whether planting seeds, measuring ingredients, reading great books, or solving math challenges, every day is filled with purposeful, engaging experiences.

If you're looking for a program that values both academic enrichment and hands-on learning, we'd love to welcome your family to Willow Roots!

🌱 We’re ever growing and looking for dedicated educators!

Who we’re looking for:
• Value connection and curiosity over checklists
• Are comfortable thinking outside the box
• Love working with mixed ages and meeting kids where they are
• See the beauty in a relationship-centered environment
• Can balance structure with flexibility

This isn’t a sit-at-your-desk kind of job. It’s active, engaging, sometimes messy, and incredibly meaningful.

If you’re someone who wants to be part of a community where kids are excited to learn (and genuinely sad to miss a day), we’d love to connect.

Everyone has experienced or heard of kids faking sick so they don’t have to go to school.

Here, we experience the opposite more often.

We’ve seen kids try their very best to power through a bad cough because they don’t want to miss the day—ask us not to call their parents. They are genuinely disappointed when they have to stay home and miss out. We’ve even had learners, fresh from getting teeth pulled, asking if they can come right back. Oh, and crying the last day of school because they know they won’t be back for a couple months. 😢

The contrast is a little funny, but also something deeper. When children feel connected, when their days are filled with meaningful work, real relationships, and hands-on experiences, school becomes a place they truly want to be. It’s not just somewhere they go, it’s somewhere they belong.

Of course, we still send them home to rest when they need it, but it speaks volumes that they really are disappointed when they have to leave.

And honestly, it’s something special to be a part of. Getting to witness that kind of joy, connection, and love for learning every day is a reminder of why this work matters so much.
