Arkansas foresters and landowners, we'll see you in Hot Springs! 🌲

NativState is proud to sponsor the Arkansas Forestry Association Annual Meeting, Oct. 6–8. As an Arkansas-based company, this one feels like home, and we can't wait to catch up with landowners, foresters, and friends from across the state.

Don't miss our own Kevin Wood, Director of Wildlife and Ecology, on the AI in Forestry panel:
πŸ—“οΈ Wednesday, Oct. 7
πŸ• 1–2 p.m.
Kevin will join Daniel Killebrew of Highland Pellets and Dr. Kyle Cunningham of the Arkansas Department of Agriculture's Forestry Division to talk about how new technology is shaping the way we manage and care for our forests.

While you're there, stop by and say hello! We'd love to talk about conserving the forest you have 🌳 or growing a new one 🌱.

🌲 This month's Species of the Month is one of the most recognizable trees in the Southeast: the bald cypress!

You've probably seen these trees standing knee-deep in swamp water, with their wide, flared trunks and those mysterious "knees" poking up around the base. But bald cypress isn't just scenic β€” it's doing serious work for the ecosystem.

These trees create nursery habitat for fish when floodwaters rise, provide nesting spots for birds like the swallow-tailed kite, and help filter and slow water moving through the forest before it reaches rivers downstream. Some bald cypress trees are also incredibly long-lived β€” over 1,000 years in some cases β€” which means they're locking away carbon for a very long time.

In projects like the Bottomland Forests of the Lower Mississippi Valley, bald cypress bottomlands are part of what makes the habitat so rich β€” proof that protecting forests for carbon also means protecting the wildlife and water that depend on them. πŸ’§πŸŒ³

Today is World Rivers Day, and we're taking the chance to celebrate the parts of the watershed that don't get much credit.

Big rivers get all the attention, but they depend entirely on the small stuff: the creek behind a farm, the wet spot in the woods, the headwater stream you'd never notice from the road. These small forest water sources filter pollutants, cool the water for fish, and feed the larger rivers downstream, including the mighty Mississippi.

We work with landowners across the Southeast to protect exactly these places. Since 2021, that's meant safeguarding over 800,000 acres of forest and 3,000 miles of streams, many right here in the Mississippi Alluvial Plain.

So on World Rivers Day, we're thinking about all the "small" water that makes the big rivers possible. Read more about the unseen engines of the forest: https://hubs.li/Q04xydlD0

The forest you leave behind will speak for you.

Passing down acreage is important, but leaving future generations a healthy, thriving piece of land is even more important. Biodiversity is what makes that possible. A forest rich in plant and wildlife diversity has stronger soil, cleaner water, and greater resilience against drought, disease, and storms, so your land stays healthy for your kids, grandkids, and generations beyond that.

Enrolling in NativState's forest high-quality carbon credit program is one of the most direct ways to protect that legacy. You're paid to maintain the biodiversity that keeps your land strong for the long haul, while building a financial asset that can benefit your family for years to come.

It's not just about today's forest. It's about the one your grandchildren will inherit. Ready to protect what matters most? Let's talk. https://hubs.li/Q04xycHM0

Your forest is more valuable than you might think.

If you own forestland in the southeastern U.S., you're caring for some of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. Longleaf pine savannas, bottomland hardwoods, and upland woodlands support species found nowhere else, while protecting clean water and healthy soil.

NativState's carbon credit program pays you for protecting that value. No giving up control of your land, just getting rewarded for sustainable, responsible stewardship.
🌿 Earn income from carbon credits

Some forests take centuries to grow, and once they're gone, there's no getting them back.

That's exactly why our partnership with the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission (ANHC) matters so much. Together, we've been identifying and protecting some of Arkansas's rarest forest land, including old-growth forest in Hempstead County that qualifies as true old-growth under national forestry standards.

On this property alone, our team has helped protect:
🌿 A no-harvest buffer along the Little River, home to endangered freshwater mussels
🌳 220 acres of an imperiled forest type
🌲 226 acres of old-growth forest, one of the rarest forest types left in the mid-South

We're also monitoring for the endangered Indiana bat using acoustic sensors, sharing the data with researchers across the region.

None of this is required. The landowner chose to protect these areas voluntarily, as part of their forest carbon agreement. proving that conservation and long-term income for landowners can absolutely go hand in hand.

Most of the nation's drinking water originates in forests. Wildlife, communities, and economies rely on this natural resource. Our latest article dives into the network of water sources that support entire watersheds and how forest carbon projects and sustainable forest management are leading the way in protecting these unseen sources of life.
