Why Your CPAP Mask Matters More Than You Think
The right CPAP mask can make a big difference in how well your sleep apnea treatment works.
CPAP masks aren’t one-size-fits-all. Whether you breathe through your mouth, have facial hair, struggle with air leaks, or simply can’t get comfortable, the type and fit of your mask matter. A good seal helps your CPAP deliver the pressurized air you need without excessive leaking.
There are several types of CPAP interfaces, including nasal pillows, nasal masks, full-face masks, and other options designed for specific patient needs. Working with a qualified sleep professional can help you find a mask that fits properly and works with your prescribed therapy.

Can You Get a Sleep Apnea Oral Appliance If You Have a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge replaces a missing tooth by using the teeth on either side of the gap for support. Those supporting teeth are typically covered with crowns, with an artificial tooth connected between them to “bridge” the empty space.
Because a sleep apnea oral appliance is custom-made for your mouth, it can be designed to accommodate existing dental work. Dr. Suzanne Thai explains that during your exam, she evaluates the location and stability of the bridge. The appliance can then be made to fit more passively around it so it doesn’t unnecessarily pull or tug on the restoration.

Have you been snoring your whole life?
Can You Get a Sleep Apnea Oral Appliance If You’ve Had a Root Canal?
Have you had a root canal and are wondering if that means you can’t get a sleep apnea oral appliance? In many cases, you still can.
Dr. Suzanne Thai explains that having a root canal or crown does not automatically prevent you from using oral appliance therapy for obstructive sleep apnea. These appliances are custom-made to fit your individual teeth and mouth, including around existing dental work.
Every patient’s teeth, gums and dental restorations should be evaluated before treatment, but a history of root canals alone doesn’t necessarily rule you out. If you’ve been putting off asking about an oral appliance because of previous dental work, it may still be an option.

Are You in a “Sleep Divorce” Because of Snoring?
Has snoring forced you or your partner to start sleeping in another room? You may be experiencing what’s sometimes called a “sleep divorce.”
Loud or persistent snoring doesn’t just disrupt your partner’s sleep. It can also be a warning sign of obstructive sleep apnea, a condition where breathing repeatedly becomes blocked or reduced during sleep. If snoring is regularly driving someone out of the bedroom, it may be time to find out what’s causing it.
A sleep evaluation or sleep study can help determine whether sleep apnea is involved. Addressing the underlying problem could improve your sleep, protect your health, and maybe even get you and your partner back in the same bed.

Can a Sleep Apnea Oral Appliance Change the Shape of Your Face?
Dr. Suzanne Thai answers a question she received from someone on social media - can a sleep apnea oral appliance disfigure your face? Sleep Apnea oral appliances work by holding the lower jaw forward during sleep to help keep the airway open. Because the jaw is positioned forward for hours each night, some patients can experience changes in their bite.
Dr. Thai explains how morning jaw exercises and a repositioner can help guide the jaw and bite back toward their normal position after the appliance is removed. She also explains why proper fitting, follow-up care, and working with a dentist trained in dental sleep medicine are important when using an oral appliance for sleep apnea.

Does Laser Therapy For Sleep Apnea Require Ongoing Treatments?
If you receive laser therapy for sleep apnea, will you need to keep getting treatments over time?
Dr. Suzanne Thai answers a question she received on social media about whether laser therapy is a one-time treatment or requires ongoing maintenance. She explains that patients typically begin with three sessions, with results that may last around nine months to a year. Because the tissues of the mouth and throat are constantly being used for talking, eating, and swallowing, maintenance treatments may be needed over time.
Dr. Thai explains why some patients may return for a maintenance treatment after the first year and why the frequency can vary from person to person.

The Benefits of CPAP on Blood Pressure and Sleep Apnea
CPAP may help your health in more ways than simply treating sleep apnea.
In this conversation, sleep dentist Dr. Suzanne Thai and cardiologist Dr. Dan Caldwell explain how treating obstructive sleep apnea can play a role in blood pressure management. While CPAP’s direct effect on blood pressure may be modest for some patients, successful treatment can also improve daytime energy and make it easier to stay active and exercise.
That’s why Dr. Caldwell emphasizes the combination effect: treating sleep apnea, improving energy, increasing physical activity and managing weight can all work together to support better cardiovascular health.

Why Cardiologists Need To Takes Sleep Apnea and Sleep Health Very Seriously
Why would a cardiologist become so focused on sleep apnea?
For cardiologist Dr. Dan Caldwell, the answer comes down to what treating sleep apnea may do for a patient’s overall health. In this conversation with sleep dentist Dr. Suzanne Thai, he explains why addressing sleep apnea became an important part of how he thinks about cardiovascular care.
One of the biggest connections is blood pressure. Obstructive sleep apnea is associated with hypertension, and Dr. Caldwell explains that blood pressure can sometimes become easier to manage when a patient’s sleep apnea is properly addressed.
It’s another reminder that quality sleep isn’t just about waking up rested—it can be an important part of your overall health.
